**Reports To**: Associate Director, Legal

**Position Summary**: As a member of CAPREIT’s Legal Department, the Legal Counsel will assist in supporting the various business units in matters relating to corporate governance, securities and regulatory matters, and providing general legal advice.

**Responsibilities**:

- Provide legal advice to CAPREIT and its affiliates
- Respond to a variety of legal requests from internal clients, communicating legal concepts to the business in a manner that is easy to understand
- Assist the Legal Department with the overall management of the legal function and legal affairs of CAPREIT and its affiliates, including preparing short briefing memos
- Draft and review continuous disclosure documents as required by applicable securities laws
- Assist with equity and debt financings
- Provide corporate secretarial assistance, as required (i.e. assist in preparing board materials, drafting minutes, coordinating regulatory filings etc.)
- Assist with drafting and review of commercial agreements, including professional services, marketing partnerships, and business and technology agreements
- Work with corporate service departments to standardize contracts and letters of engagements
- Work with and instruct external counsel, as needed

**Skills & Requirements**:

- LL.B or J.D. in good standing, called to the Bar in a Canadian province, and membership in an applicable law society or bar association
- At least 2 years’ experience post-call at a top law firm or a corporate counsel role with knowledge of corporate and commercial practice. Knowledge of Canadian securities law, rules and regulations will be an asset.
- Must be able to think strategically and creatively, with a focus on identifying and implementing solutions to legal issues
- Excellent time management and organizational skills. The ability to prioritize will be essential.
- Must be able to keep abreast of major initiatives and/or changes in Canadian and European law and maintain good connections with key external counsel and firms, particularly when specialized knowledge / research must be accessed
- Excellent attention to detail
- Ability to speak/write in French is an asset
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to effectively communicate with legal and non-legal stakeholders
