Job Title: Legal Counsel

**$45.67 - $48/hr**

Job Purpose:
Responsible for providing legal support to various areas of the company in North America in conjunction with the Head Legal and Corporate Secretary. The individual will act as the primary provider of legal advice and oversight to all areas of the Group's operations and team with its business units to oversee legal compliance. The incumbent will also act as an intermediary between the business units and external counsel.

Area of Responsibilities
- Build an internal knowledge pool on laws applicable to all areas of banking operations. Regularly update with legal opinions received from external counsel so as to build self-sufficiency in select areas.
- Keep abreast with the latest developments and assess implications on Bank's Business.
- Act as the first point of reference for any legal support required from business representatives. Minimize reliance on external legal support.
- Act as an intermediary between external counsels and Business representatives so as to facilitate the best utilization of the external legal support.
- Proactively assess legal risks associated with different areas of the Bank's Operations. Monitor for any violations.
- Coordinate with members of the Corporate Legal team in the parent Bank for any matter relating to legal compliance.
- Act as Internal Legal counsel on day-to-day matters referred for legal advice.
- Provide support as a legal specialist in case of any litigation or litigation risk against the Bank. Work closely with External Counsel to mitigate/manage such risks.
- Other legal, corporate secretarial or governance duties as assigned.

Job Requirements/ Specification
- Must have Law Degree
- Called to the Bar in a Canadian Province (required) and New York (preferred)
- Must have 2+ years of experience in Financial Services(preferred)

Functional Skills
- Understanding of the bank's Corporate & Commercial business
- Understanding of the Legal framework and all applicable legislation in North America
- Understanding of applicable regulatory environment in North America
- Management of external counsel requirements

- Superior interpersonal, organizational and research skills with the ability to work well in a team environment as well as with other departments and outside sources

**Job Types**: Full-time, Permanent

**Salary**: $45.67-$48.00 per hour
