**Environmental Operator I**

**This union position offers an hourly wage rate of $27.21 to $34.01, 40 hours per week (OPSEU Local 328). Per the Collective Agreement, OPSEU members have first consideration.**

**Position**S**ummary**:
Reporting to the Environmental Supervisor, the Environmental Operator I will operate, maintain, sample, test and repair the Drinking Water Treatment, Supply and Distribution Systems, and Wastewater Treatment and Collection System to meet all Provincial regulatory requirements. The Environmental Operator I will perform work of an operational and maintenance nature in the Environmental Services Department.

**Duties & Responsibilities**:
**Laboratory and Operational Activities**
- Provide safe drinking water to the public through testing and sampling and ensure adverse water quality results are reported immediately.
- Perform various laboratory activities of the water and wastewater systems as directed. Uphold effluent water standards as outlined in the ECA to ensure protection of public health. Collect water samples for laboratory analysis and Certificate of Approval compliance.
- Analyze test results and adjust equipment and systems to ensure quality control.
- Maintain all operational manuals, records, data, schedules, etc. associated with the compliance of the Water and Wastewater System.
- Initiate and track operational changes using various computerized control systems, e.g., S.C.A.D.A., to determine normal and abnormal events.
- Respond to emergency situations such as water main and service breaks, plugged sewer mains, storm sewar blockages and flooding.
- Provide customer service support as required.
- Assume responsibility for the operation of the Water and Wastewater Systems on weekends, holidays and such other times as directed.

**Maintenance Support**:

- Inspect, maintain and repair all equipment, buildings, confined spaces and devices in the Environmental Services Department.
- Repair and install mechanical equipment such as pumps, motors, chlorinators, chemical handling systems and related components.
- Operate equipment and vehicles used in the Water & Wastewater Systems.

- Abide by the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and work in a manner that is safe, reporting incidents immediately to direct supervisor.

- Maintain knowledge and expertise in relevant fields.

**Qualifications and Requirements**:

- College diploma in a related field including Civil Engineering, Water/Wastewater or Environmental studies or equivalent related experience.
- Minimum of one (1) year of municipal water and wastewater or related experience with one (1) year OIC experience.
- Certifications in Class 1 Wastewater Treatment, Class 1 Wastewater Collection, Class 1 Water Treatment, and Class 1 Water Distribution and Supply required.
- Electrical, mechanical, or plumbing background with working experience is an asset.
- Valid Class G driver’s license in good standing required. Valid Class ‘DZ’ Driver’s license is an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal, time management, analytical, communication, problem-solving and leadership skills.
- Ability to prioritize workload, meet deadlines, be detailed oriented and accurate.
- Ability to gather, analyze and present data; along with training and experience in diagnosing problems, trouble shooting and repairing complex equipment.
- Ability to think and act strategically in a utility service environment.
- Ability to interact effectively and courteously with all levels of staff and customers in a Customer Service focused environment; build cooperative, collaborative working relationships with internal and external customers.
- Thorough working knowledge of construction, maintenance of utility operations, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- First Aid/CPR and Confined Space Entry Certification.
- Must have a thorough knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Nutrient Management Act (NMA), MECP Regulations and Operating Guidelines, in addition to any o
