Edmonton, Canada Intercultural Child & Family Centre Full time

The Assistant Manager reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for ensuring that all activities within the Intercultural Child and Family Centre reflect the mission and philosophy of the Child Care Centre and are in accordance with the policies of the Child Care Centre. This includes maintaining high quality programming for children, supervising child care employees, demonstrating effective intercultural practice and creating a warm, welcoming environment for families.

**Responsibilities**:

- Assists the Executive Director in selecting, hiring, training, supervising, evaluating, and if required, dismissing all child care employees.
- Orients new child care employees.
- Advises the Executive Director of equipment and supplies needed to carry out the program.
- Arranges work schedules for all employees to ensure that the child-employees ratio represents the most efficient use of employees time while meeting provincial standards at all times.
- Maintains on-going program review through participation in the program, individual consultations with employees on a regular basis, and regular room meetings to inform, direct, and hear the concerns of all employees.
- Contributes to personnel records. Ensures that employees are familiar with the responsibilities of each position and with the personnel policies of the Child Care Centre.
- Works with the child care educators to plan and provide curriculum that is stimulating, developmentally appropriate and culturally affirming.
- Conducts weekly planning meetings with the educators in each room
- Invites and uses cultural input in planning
- Plans curriculum that systematically supports the learning of home languages
- Ensures that written plans are prepared and posted weekly
- Establishes appropriate routines and ensures positive guidance practices in accordance with the guidance policy.
- Ensures regular documentation of children’s activities. Maintains files for each child with documentation of child’s work. Shares these with families on a regular basis. Ensures that confidentiality is maintained with respect to the storage of children’s files and the sharing of information
- Ensures that proper forms related to child health and safety are completed (e.g. accident/incident reports, medication forms)
- Ensures that child care educators are aware of allergies and special concerns of all children and that they know where emergency medications are kept.
- Assists the Executive Director in providing a formal evaluation, in writing, at least annually with suggested performance objectives for each employee, prepared in consultation with each employee.
- Participates in planning, and facilitates, regular fieldtrips and special events planned by the child care educators to enrich the learning experiences of the children.
- Assists child care educators in documenting the activities of each child and in using this documentation for purposes of planning and for communicating with families.
- Documents for the Executive Director any perceived problems with work performance of employees.
- Works with the employees toward achieving and maintaining accreditation status in all areas related to programming.
- Recommends staff development activities to the Executive Director
- Fills in as requested in the absence of the Executive Director
- Debriefs and follows up on critical incidents in conjunction with the Executive Director to provide support, ensure that proper protocol was followed, and minimize future incidents.
- Monitors equipment and rooms to ensure that safety protocols are being followed for optimum protection of children, employees and others.
- Other duties as required.

**Skills and Qualities**
- Degree or Diploma in Early Learning and Care or similar field of study from a recognized College or University. Level 3 child care certification
- Deeply committed to the mission and philosophy of the child care program
- Knowledge and ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and communities (diversity of race, class, age gender, religion, culture, sexual orientation, ethnicity, national origin, ability, etc)
- A learner; constantly working to build understanding and skills particularly around creating a culturally affirming program and supporting home language.
- A warm, open manner and a good energy level
- flexibility
- Comfortable communicating and collaborating with families of diverse cultures and languages
- Strong interpersonal and teambuilding skills.
- Experience in an intercultural environment an asset
