The Shelter Support Staff reports to the Executive Manager or designate and works in accordance with the mission and philosophy of Lakeland Out if the Elements Society. The Shelter Support Staff carries out a variety of duties related to the operation of the shelter so that participants' basic needs are supported, to learn to increasingly support their own basic needs to be able to move into transitional housing if possible. Primary responsibilities of workers are to provide regular daily, overnight, weekend, and holiday coverage; maintain shelter security and safety, model healthy relationships and carry out case management policies and practices.

**EXPECTATIONS OF ALL EMPLOYEES**

In the performance of essential and general job responsibilities, all LOESS employees are expected to:

**PARTICIPANT SUPPORT SERVICES/DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**

1. Review participant background information, interview participants to obtain case history and prepare intake reports.

2. Assess participants’ relevant skills, strengths, and needs in case management plans.

3. Assist participants to sort out options and develop plans of action while providing necessary support and assistance.

4. Refer participants to other social services or assist participants in locating and utilizing community resources including legal, medical, and financial assistance, housing, employment, transportation, and other services.

5. Enforce rules and regulations of the LOESS program (mat and transitional).

6. Maintain a sanitary environment as per daily, weekly cleaning list ensuring to record completed duties.

7. Maintain a safe and comfortable environment for all individuals accessing services.

8. Serve meals following direction from AHS and safe food handling guidelines as per Alberta Health.

9. Conduct intake security check upon participant's arrival to the shelter.

10. Ensure all policies and procedures are followed as per the LOESS Policy and Procedures.

11. Notice, act on, and manage situations/jobs that need attention without direction and to recognize those situations that require further guidance from management and/or directors.

12. Observe and report any substantial or unusual behaviour in physical condition changes in participants.

13. Maintain clear record keeping and documentation.

14. Participates in design and implementation of program activities.

15. Maintain a positive attitude toward learning and sharing learning with others.

16. Provide guidance and support to participants on the shelter’s policy and procedures.

17. Communicate effectively with participants including active listening and problem solving around barriers.

18. Provide guidance and support to participants in emergency situations.

19. Work cooperatively and effectively with other staff, volunteers, community service providers, and participants.

20. Inquiries from press e.g., radio, newspapers must be forwarded to Board Chair.

21. Other duties as assigned.

**Health and Safety Responsibilities**

1. Report all health and safety concerns to the Executive Manager and/or designate.

2. Take every reasonable precaution to ensure the safety and well-being of participants and staff.

3. Have to provide a clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.

4. Must be willing to undertake regular training and attend all staff meetings.

5. Will wear panic button at all times and willing to call authorities when the need arises.

6. Prepare incident reports when required. Executive Manager or designate, must sign off on all incident reports.

**QUALIFICATIONS**

**Education, Training and Experience**

1. Diploma or Certificate in a related field such as addictions counselling, social work, Personal support worker, Aboriginal Canadian relations, or a combination of education and/or experience preferred.

2. Previous experience working in a shelter is a definite asset.

3. Knowledge of harm reduction, community service agencies, and homelessness are assets.

4. Trustworthy, honest, and a team player.

5. Understands and demonstrates confidentiality.

Skills and Abilities

1. Ability to use sound judgement and perform job duties with mínimal supervision.

2. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with participants, other staff, volunteers, community agencies, and the community.
