Policy and Research Intern

**MAIN FUNCTION**:
Provides policy and research support for advocacy work undertaken by the Chamber of Commerce. Under the direction of the Director of Policy and Government Relations, this role supports the success of the Chamber’s advocacy goals, organizational initiatives and strategic objectives.
**DUTIES**:
- Draft reports to committees and task forces on topics as assigned.
- Summarize research findings for reporting to management and directors.
- Primary and secondary research activities, literature reviews, and drafting research reports.
- Organize, collect and interpret data.
- Draft correspondence and materials in response to internal and external inquiries.
- Assist with the preparation of meetings, including writing briefing notes and reports.
- Assist with preparing communications.
- Research best practices from other industry-leading associations and groups to improve advocacy efforts.

**QUALIFICATIONS**
**EDUCATION AND TRAINING**:
- College diploma, university degree, or equivalent work experience, in business, policy, political science, history, communications, or a related field from a recognized college with Canadian accreditation.
- Additional education initiatives to update and expand competencies.
**EXPERIENCE**:
- Minimum of two years of related experience.
- Experience within a not-for-profit and/or Board of Directors is a definite asset.
**KNOWLEDGE OF**:
- Demonstrate an understanding of current affairs, preferably at the municipal provincial and federal levels of government.
- Knowledge of professional research methods, with an ability to write independently with proper sourcing.
**ABILITIES TO**:
- Demonstrate organization, time management, adaptability and judgment.
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently and under pressure.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Demonstrate interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with members, staff, political representatives, business/community leaders, outside groups and agencies.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Provide exceptional internal and external customer service.
- Present complex information in a simple manner
**PERSONAL SUITABILITY**:
Mental and physical fitness to perform essential job functions.
**LANGUAGE**:
Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.
French/other language verbal and written skills are an asset, but not a requirement.
**COMPENSATION**:
$19/hour
**Job Type**: Internship / Co-op
Contract length: 12 months
Pay: $19.00 per hour
Expected hours: 37.5 per week
