The incumbent is responsible for the development, administration, implementation, and evaluation of Health, Safety, Environmental, and Sustainability services, including safety, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, and environmental programs. This position is also responsible for employee advocacy in employee relations matters.
- **This position will have daily on-site presence at our Hanover, Canada warehouse with occasional travel to Milton**_
**MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and environmental legislation.
- Compliance with Edgewell’s health and safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Participate and provide support and resources to the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
- Manage health and safety training programs and deliver training as required.
- Act as a resource to the appropriate personnel in developing and maintaining a safe work environment and recommend to management improvements in health and safety, specifically advising management of any condition, activity, or work practices within the operation that is inconsistent with legislation, corporate standards, or good occupational health and safety practices.
- Identify the health & wellness needs of employees; develop objectives & implement programs in health promotion, maintenance, and rehabilitation. Make referrals to EAP.
- Participate in safety inspections, ergonomic assessments, and accident investigations.
- Provide counsel and advice to employees, supervisors, and management on their rights and obligations with respect to health and safety. Promote understanding of health and safety issues that are pertinent to the operation of the facility.
- Manage and keep current the Modified Work and Return to Work programs, which include working with the employee, manager, and physician.
- Manage workers’ compensation costs by monitoring case progress, ensuring claims meet the criteria for claim acceptance, reviewing WSIB cost statements, and preparing the correspondence needed for appeals.
- Responsible for the maintenance of M.S.D.S. This includes the annual chemical audit, handling of chemicals, and instruction in the use and handling of chemicals.
- Provide emergency training to employees and maintain the Health Center and First Aid stations in the production area according to legislation.
- Responsible for the Medical Surveillance program for designated substances & control programs, including the maintenance of exposure records & record keeping. Also required is the purchasing, instruction in use, and distribution of employee personal protective equipment and all related health training.
- Responsible for the Industrial Hygiene and the Hazardous Waste and Spill Control Programs, which include sampling, equipment, maintenance, reporting, and record keeping.
- Partner with consultants (e.g., physicians, kinesiologists) as needed to provide occupational health services; develop and maintain relationships with health practitioners and services agencies in the community.
- Manage Environmental and Sustainability programs and initiatives such as the Ontario Blue Box Recycling Program and Stewardship reporting obligations.
- Manage all Environmental and Sustainability performance metrics and goals.
- Work with U.S. counterparts to share best practices.
**SKILLS & EXPERIENCE**
- 1+ Years of experience in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS).
- A certificate, diploma, degree, or other recognized formal training related directly to OHS or a similar discipline.
- Joint Health and Safety Committee Certified (preferred).
- Solid knowledge of the Ontario Health & Safety Act, safe work practices, WSIB legislation, Human Rights Code, Health Disciplines Act, Employment Standards Act, Edgewell Health & Safety policies, Edgewell HR policies and practices, hazards and controls involved with any designated substances or dangerous goods in the facility, JSA and safety procedures for all production equipment, and quality standards.
- Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills at all levels within the organization and external contacts.
- Established (or ability to establish) contacts with local health practitioners and agencies.
- Problem solver with the ability to balance both organizational and employee needs and issues.
- Strong organizational, project management, and change management skills.
- Able to handle sensitive issues with tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
- Confident and collaborative person who thrives in a team-based environment.
- Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office products.
- Working towards a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) Designation is an asset.
