**Nasittuq provides Operation & Maintenance services for the North Warning System (NWS). The NWS is a joint Canada and United States early-warning radar system with 47 sites located in Northern Canada; a Control Centre and Support Centre located in North Bay, ON and a Contract Management Office located in Ottawa, ON.**
**Scope**:
The Occupational Health & Safety Officer is responsible for the establishment of all policies and procedures relating to safety in accordance with Contractual and Regulatory requirements, which includes monitoring for the well-being of employees, ensuring safety on premises, and conducting on-site safety inspections.
**Responsibilities**:
- Prepare, maintain, and implement the Occupational Health & Safety Plan (OH&SP)
- Establish and maintain Health and Safety related Policies and Procedures
- Conduct safety inspections at all sites in frequency required by the NWS Statement of Work (SOW) documenting and tracking corrective action requirements
- Establish, review and maintain OH&S training Programs
- Conduct OH&S training for Nasittuq staff
- Support Occupational Health and Safety Committees
- Develop programs regarding safety procedures and accident prevention
- Investigate medical emergencies and occupational health and safety incidents and prepare monthly incident statistics and subsequent reports
- Compile/submit the annual OH&S report to Employment & Skills Development Canada (ESDC)
- Ensure compliance of the OH&SP with current federal, provincial, and territorial legislation as appropriate, as well as the SOW, by regularly reviewing these publications, and making recommendations for amendments to the Fire & Safety Supervisor
- Administer the requirements of the Hazard Prevention Program
- Investigate, document, and report all significant incidents
- Mentor Junior Health and Safety Officer
- Performs other duties/projects as assigned, to support the overall program and mission, and other initiatives of Nasittuq
**Qualifications**:
**EDUCATION**:
- Minimum 2-year diploma in Occupational Health and Safety from a recognized academic program
**EXPERIENCE**:
- Three (3) years’ related experience in a safety position
**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES**:
- Proven report writing skills and experience
- Comfortable with working for extended periods in an isolated environment
- Knowledge of federal, provincial/territorial safety legislation, codes, and guidelines pertaining to the operations of the NWS sites
- Cultural awareness and sensitivity with an understanding of work in the Canadian Arctic
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office software
- Experience using Maximo software
- Hold a valid driver’s license, class “G”
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work/contribute well independently and in a team environment
- Adaptability and ability to manage priorities with attention to detail and work cross-culturally
**DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**:
- Applicants must be certified as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional or eligible for designation as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional
**EFFORT**:
- Work normally takes place in an office environment and requires little physical effort
- ** Regular travel to remote arctic locations required**
