Reporting to the Director Occupational Health, Safety & Emergency Management Systems, the Occupational Health & Safety Officer is responsible to coordinate, advise and participate in the development and revision of Safety programs, policies & procedures, to ensure compliance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

The Occupational Health and Safety Officer will support, promote, recommend and assist with the on-going development and improvement of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System and all other related programs such as:
**Position Specific Accountabilities**:
**Accountability #1**:
**Provide Health and Safety Program Coordination to employees**
- Maintains comprehensive records of Safety, incidents, assessments, reports and trauma.
- Provide education and orientation to new employees concerning safety programs
- Provide training to staff including formal training sessions, electronic education, mock exercises, etc.
- Ensure Accreditation Canada standards are met for The Royal.
- Maintain statistics, monitor trends, identify needs for interventions, further training, etc.
- Conduct Hazard Risk Assessments on new and emerging hazards to ensure they are appropriately mitigated.
- Lead ROHCG participation in the WSIB Excellence Program.

**Accountability #2**:
**Employee Health and Safety, policies and practices**
- Develop, administer and coordinate policies, procedures, programs and initiatives for safety systems by maintaining knowledge of current trends, practices and related medical issues.
- Perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all other policies and procedures related to staff safety.
- Act as a support and a resource for managers, employees and the Joint Health & Safety committee on occupational health and safety related matters.
- Investigate accidents, hazards and concerns reported by staff.

**Accountability #3**:
**Education and Training**
- Develop and provide education, guidance, advice and consultative services to staff, management team and relevant committees on all staff safety issues.
- Provide ongoing education to staff and managers on their safety responsibilities.
- Develop content for the yearly mandatory H&S learning modules.

**Accountability #4**:
**External providers**
- Serve as a liaison with external providers such as MLSTD, WSIB, and PSHSA on OHS related issues.
- Liaise with the MLSTD during critical incident follow-up
- Submits reports to the MLSTD and WSIB following critical injuries or occupational illness as per regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with local and regional external OHS group to find new sources of information to promote continuous improvement.

**Accountability #5**:
**Miscellaneous**
- Coordinate monthly and annual OHS audits, inspections, and preparation of action plans resulting from H&S audits and inspections.
- Coordinate pre-start health & safety reviews and risk assessments for new equipment, machinery, and processes
- Act as a resource to facilitate and coordinate the Joint Health and Safety Committees
- Manage and oversee the Safely Managing Change process for new equipment, renovations or other changes being introduced into the organization.
- Facilitate Individualized Safety Plans for staff that are being targeted by domestic situations or workplace violence.
- Facilitate department level violence risk assessments in collaboration with the unit management team to identify hazards and address.
- Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of The Royal.
- Ensures a work environment that is conducive to The Royal’s Anti-Racism, Discrimination and Harassment-Free Workplace policy.

**Qualifications**:

- Baccalaureate degree in a Health Profession with a certificate/diploma in Occupational Health & Safety; or completion of a University program in Occupational Health & Safety or relevant work experience will be considered.
- Certified Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or in progress or similar recognized accreditation will be an asset.
- Previously or currently certified as a Joint Health
