**Role Summary**

As an Environmental DNA Research Assistant, you will be responsible for supporting the Environmental DNA (eDNA) Lab Coordinator with conservation-oriented molecular genetics-based research on marine biodiversity and ecosystems as part of the Whale Health & Monitoring (WHAM) program pillar. Working in collaboration with the Environmental DNA (eDNA) Lab Coordinator, the Senior Manager, WHAM, and other WHAM staff, you will work towards overarching Whales Initiative 2030 goals by supporting with various molecular analyses and helping to maintain the functionality of the eDNA lab.

**Who You Are**

You are a detail-oriented biologist with hands-on lab experience in DNA extraction, quantification, and analysis. You are highly organized, skilled in data management and statistical tools like R, and comfortable following strict lab safety protocols. You bring curiosity, precision, and a passion for advancing ocean conservation through eDNA research

**What You Will Be Doing**

**_ Program Assistance_**
- Supporting the processing and analysis of environmental DNA samples (e.g., extracting DNA, quantifying DNA, and running gels with DNA products) for a variety of WHAM projects to meet the Whales Initiative’s annual deliverables and 2030 goals.
- Supporting sample processing and report writing for eDNA service contracts.
- Assisting with maintenance of inventories for the eDNA lab as required.
- Supporting in summarizing eDNA data and updating online databases.
- Assisting with fieldwork and data collection where/if needed (seasonally).

**_Data Dissemination_**
- Supporting with the preparation of eDNA research papers for peer-review publication.
- Support with the preparation of blogs and/or social media content related to eDNA topics in collaboration with the Communications team.

**What You Bring**
- Bachelor’s (BSc) Degree in Biology or related field.
- Demonstrated experience in working within a laboratory environment.
- Knowledge of the foundations of eDNA and the processes involved in sample analysis.
- Demonstrated experience in following lab health and safety protocols.
- Good time management and organizational skills.
- Ability to multi-task with keen attention to detail.
- Excellent skills in database and spreadsheet management.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, R, or equivalent programs.
- WHIMIS certificate or ability to obtain the same.
- Assets include:

- Small Vessel Operator’s Proficiency certificate (SVOP).
- Marine Radio Operators Certificate (ROC-M).
- Marine First Aid certification.

**How You Will Be Measured**
- Number of new eDNA samples extracted and quantified.
- Supports successful completion of eDNA-related grant deliverables.
- Supports the annual update of laboratory inventories.
- Number of scientific manuscripts contributed to.
- Supports the success of the Whales Initiative’s eDNA lab contract completion(s).

**Where and How You’ll Work**

Our typical work week is 37.5 hours. This is an in-person position, working in an open-concept laboratory based in the Pacific Science Enterprise Centre (PSEC) in West Vancouver. Whilst some duties can be conducted remotely (i.e., database maintenance and contributing to papers), a majority of this role requires an in-person commitment. The role may require flexibility to travel for meetings and/or to work occasional weekends and evenings to attend Ocean Wise-related fieldwork/meetings. The role may require time spent on small research vessels, where cramped conditions, engine noise, rough seas and cold, damp weather are to be expected.

This role involves sitting, standing, working on a computer or laptop, working with DNA machines and chemicals in a laboratory environment, and participating in phone and video calls.
