Academic Advisor, Psychology

**About the Role**:
Reporting to the Chair, Psychology, the Academic Advisor is responsible for advising Psychology majors in all streams and levels on program requirements. The incumbent will monitor the academic progress of students in Psychology Undergraduate programs, including transfer students, international students and those minoring in Psychology.
**The Academic Advisor will**:
- Perform student academic advising for undergraduate students in the assigned programs by informing current, transfer, international and prospective students, as well as students minoring in the program, regarding all Faculty programs and services;
- Create and student program plans, including course selection and program/Faculty/University requirements;
- Inform students about prerequisite requirements and course restrictions and introducing them to the advising services available to them;
- Manage advising appointments, both virtually and in-person, opening appointment times and tracking student requests and inquiries;
- Maintain related advising notes/files, complete related documentation, and compose related correspondence;
- Monitor the progress of students at risk academically, provide guidance on resources and make referrals to increase the likelihood of student success;
- Inform the Associate Dean of student requests (for course overload, context credit exceptions, maximum/minimum credit level requirements, students in crisis, program development, etc.);
- Maintain strong knowledge of academic calendar, academic regulations, Faculty Handbook and other policies, timelines and important dates as needed;
- Attend student recruitment events including the Ontario Universities’ Fair, Fall Preview Day, Spring Open House and others as needed, representing the assigned programs/Faculty and/or office;
- Provide insight to the Academic Review Committee for proposals (having major impact to program modifications, curriculum planning, Undergraduate Program Committee (UPC) submissions, articulation agreements, college transfers, etc.);
- Participate in and contribute to department/faculty-wide meetings, curriculum committees, other sub-committee meetings, or retreats as requested.
**Key Skills and Experience**:
- An undergraduate degree in a related discipline. The equivalent combination of education and experience would be considered;
- Experience with academic advising in a post-secondary environment;
- Knowledge of academic advising, including advising models, theories, and techniques, and counselling theories;
- Understanding of the undergraduate course calendar, course offerings, prerequisites, and class scheduling for the program;
- Knowledge of University programs, services and systems;
- Understanding of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act;
- Strong active listening, verbal, written, and interpersonal skills;
- Ability to coach, mentor, and motivate students;
- Ability to identify and appropriately refer students deemed to be at-risk;
- Ability to interact effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds;
- Excellent creative problem solving, organizational and multi-tasking skills;
- Excellent prioritization and record keeping abilities.
**Preferred or Asset Skills**:
- Degree in Psychology;
- Having experienced a non-linear path or a challenging experience with academics.
**Salary and Total Rewards**:
- Job Grade J, Salary Scale ($56,503-$91,627);
- Target Hiring Range: $56,503-$60,000
