**Recreation Aide**
**Job Description**:
**Responsibilities**:
- Develop and implement evidence-based programming to meet the individual and group needs of residents in a secure unit setting, focusing on enhancing their physical, cognitive, emotional, spiritual, and social wellbeing.
- Collaborate with the Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator to design and execute Therapeutic Recreation programs, taking into consideration the unique strengths and abilities of each client.
- Provide confident and appropriate programming for seniors with dementia, addressing behaviors such as sundowning, and facilitating Montessori programming in a secure unit.
- Adapt and modify programs to accommodate individuals with cognitive, physical, or sensory limitations.
- Foster collaborative relationships with peers and demonstrate effective communication skills, including excellent written, oral, and presentation abilities.
- Work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, showcasing creative problem-solving skills and effective time management in a fast-paced environment.
- Contribute to the orientation of student and volunteer support and assist in implementing recreation participation programs based on client interests.
- Report leisure-related feedback to the Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator from residents and/or caregivers on a day-to-day basis.
Qualifications:
**Experience**:
- Minimum of 1 years working in a geriatric setting.
- Experience supporting individuals with dementia is an asset.
- Experience in a secure unit with individuals exhibiting behaviors such as sundowning and facilitating Montessori programming for seniors with dementia.
- Demonstrated understanding of the aging process and its significance to seniors, as well as the programs required to meet their diverse needs.
**Education**:
- Post-secondary education in a related field of study, such as recreation therapy or gerontology.
Skills & Abilities:
- Empathy and compassion for seniors living with dementia.
- Proven success in developing collaborative relationships with peers.
- Effective communication skills, including excellent written, oral, and presentation abilities.
- Creative problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in standard computer programs with a working knowledge of activation-related programs.
- Gentle Persuasive Approach, Dementia/Montessori Training and/or Certification, CPR/First Aid, and SmartServe certifications.
- Availability to assist with tasks outside of the job description if required.
Special Requirements:
- Satisfactory professional reference check, criminal record check, and vulnerable persons search.
- Team player mentality, willing to assist other departments when needed.
**Job Types**: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: $18.50 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
