**Job Overview**:
The Pharmacy Clinical Informatics Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the development, testing, validation and maintenance of the pharmacy system; ensuring the integrity of the pharmacy drug distribution system as it relates to the pharmacy computer system, and working with Information Technology to coordinate and test clinical interfaces for the Harris Medication Order Entry System and the electronic Medication Administration Record. This position is also responsible for the implementation and coordination of initiatives between the pharmacy and electronic medication order entry systems, and developing and maintaining pharmacy system training programs, systems documentation and department policy and procedures manuals for computerized processes.
**Responsibilities**:
- Maintain expert knowledge of the BDM pharmacy system and working knowledge of the Harris Medication Order Entry System
- Ensure the BDM pharmacy system and the electronic medication order entry system supports safe medication practice
- Work with pharmacy staff to coordinate requests for new enhancements to the pharmacy system functionality
- Liaise with BDM technical support to ensure outstanding problems are resolved quickly and effectively and document support calls and prioritize BDM system issues
- Coordinates and evaluates all pharmacy staff requests for changes and additions to the current medication order entry system builds based on the following parameters:
- Patient safety
- Clinical review of dose and administration
- Intravenous drug compatibility
- Drug interactions
- Specials drug administration considerations
- Standard Medication Administration Time Policy requirements
- Monitor data integrity and system interfaces
- Identifies, assesses and evaluates the impact of all medication incidents and hazards related to the pharmacy BDM and electronic medication order entry systems and carries out system improvement plans as necessary
- Assists with the implementation of Automated Dispensing Units and Bar Code Medication Administration hospital wide
- Coordinates any in-service training required for pharmacists with each BDM and electronic medication system database roll
- Implements any recommendations from the Institute for Safe Medication Practice (ISMP) to prevent potential drug-related issues in the pharmacy BDM and electronic medication order entry systems
- Coordinate activities with Information Technology to ensure that the electronic medication order entry system is up to date and in accordance with the formulary and the pharmacy services
- After hours support as required for testing and implementation of system enhancements
- Participate in departmental and hospital committees as assigned by the pharmacy manager
- Run BDM reports for pharmacy and other departments
- Assist the Clinical Pharmacist in processing the Three Month Medication Review
- Assist in monitoring medication inventory levels
- Ensure BDM pharmacy system forms and labels are in compliance with the Ontario College of Pharmacists and Accreditation Canada standards of practice
- Participate in pharmacist on-call rotation
- Other duties and responsibilities consistent with job classification
- Be aware of conditions and measures that may affect the safety of patient, residents, students, employees, volunteers, physicians, and visitors including:
- Compliance with the safety standards of the hospital and applicable legislation
- Identification and prevention of safety issues and problems
- Taking corrective action, where possible
**Key Qualifications**:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy
- Undergraduate degree or college diploma in Computer Science, Health Informatics, or equivalent preferred
- Licensed by the Ontario College of Pharmacists
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience in hospital pharmacy practice is required
- Demonstrated advanced proficiency with BDM Pharmacy System
- Demonstrated proficiency with Harris Medication Order Entry System
- Participation in clinical and organizational policy formulation and decision-making, especially as it relates to technology
- Synthesizes data, information, and knowledge to clarify informatics issues or problems
- Analyzes multiple approaches/solutions to the informatics issue or problem
- Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, costs, and impa
