**Position Description**:
Kids Science & Technology is an outreach program created by The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) to promote science by educating and inspiring young people through interactive experiences. SickKids acknowledges the land on which we operate. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat and Petun First Nations, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, Toronto is home to Indigenous Peoples from across Turtle Island in the territory currently known as Ontario. Kids Science & Technology program facilitates internships, mentorship programs, on-site lab visits, talks, school visits, and demonstrations for young people both within the hospital and across Toronto, the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and Ontario. Kids Science SickKids Student Advancement Research Program (StAR) provides paid and supportive summer research internships for Black, Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis), Filipino, and low-income high school students from across Ontario. SickKids is committed to supporting all young people in their pursuit of knowledge and championing equity, diversity, and inclusion.

The Kids Science & Technology program works closely with the SickKids Research Training Centre (RTC), which is dedicated to enhancing the training, support, and career development of research students (undergraduate and graduate), fellows, and associates in the SickKids Research Institute. The RTC promotes trainee success through awards and scholarships, skill and career development programs, special events, policy development, and advocacy.

As partners, Kids Science and the RTC aim to hire an Indigenous Outreach Coordinator who will draw on Indigenous ways of knowing and healing to:

- create relationships with Indigenous students and organizations locally and provincially to facilitate their participation in our collective programming and research education initiatives;
- embed best practices of including, valuing, and supporting Indigenous trainees, research methods, communication, community-building, collaboration, and decision making in our funding mechanisms, outreach, policies, and training programs.

**Key Areas of Responsibility**:

- Establish partnerships with Indigenous youth organizations, leaders, and communities that increase awareness of and participation in research training opportunities at SickKids.
- Facilitate, connect, and support Indigenous youth participation in research training initiatives.
- Provide culturally-sensitive guidance to the SickKids Research Institute on funding mechanisms, policies, guidelines and research training programs to help ensure they include and value Indigenous methods of research, communication, community-building, collaboration, and decision making.
- Support cultural safety at SickKids for Indigenous research trainees.
- Assist in managing the StAR program through supporting student onboarding, matching students with researchers, and creating engaging presentations.
- Coordinate events and information sessions about the SickKids StAR program at partner schools and community centres. Create new outreach opportunities for future program years.
- The role will evolve based on the unique experiences and qualifications of the applicant and the ever-evolving needs of the position.

**Skills or Experience Required**:

- Strong knowledge of the traditional teachings, ceremonies and values of Indigenous peoples, culture, and values (i.e., First Nations, Métis, or Inuit) particularly those who live in the territory currently called Ontario.
- Lived experience (must be Indigenous), preferably from a community based in Ontario, and engaged in your community.
- Familiarity with First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities and organizations serving young people in Ontario; existing strong networks and relationships are an asset.
- Excellent communication skills (both written and oral).
- Knowledge based interpersonal, collaboration, and facilitatio
