Inclusive Educational Assistant

**COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS**:The position includes paid sick leave and the opportunity for paid training. Depending on experience and qualifications, the position has a starting salary of $29.74 - $31.54 per hour.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work in consultation with a school based team including the principal, teachers, dedicated professionals and families to support a student’s physical, emotional, and learning needs
- Assist in the implementation and delivery of Individualized Education Plans
- Provide individual student instruction, learning and skill development on a variety of curriculum topics
- Provide further explanation and guidance on course curriculum as required
- Assist student with self-regulation strategies in partnership with classroom teacher and student services team
- Prevent, document and follow-up if student exhibits any un-regulated behaviors
- Create a safe learning environment for all students
- Provide student supervision during recess and lunch period as required
- Intervene with students who leave the classroom without permission, using de-escalation techniques and supportive communication
- Engage in professional development, school events / activities and staff meetings to improve student learning
- Plan and facilitate school programs which includes setting up, storing and maintaining equipment
- Integrate Cowichan culture, values, and language in classroom activities
- Develop positive relationships with students and staff
- Demonstrate positive role model behaviors to students
- Other related duties as required
- Assist Teacher with any administrative duties, such as photocopying, marking, note taking, recording assignments, and class demonstrations as needed
- Assist Teacher in the preparation of materials required for daily programming
- Contact students, or the families, if student is absent
- Participate in team meetings and debrief with team members regarding any student issues that arise and upcoming program activities
- Develop and implement a student Individual Education Plan (IEP) in partnership with the classroom teacher
- Participate in family-teacher IEP meetings as required
- Keep daily anecdotal records
- Other related duties as required
**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**:_**(please attach all required documents)**_
- Grade 12 or equivalent required
- 1 year Education Assistant or Community Support Worker Certificate or equivalent combination of post-secondary courses in child/adolescent social/emotional development required
- Special Needs Educator Assistant Certificate, Special & Inclusive Education Diploma, ABA Therapy Certificate or related certification preferred
- Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certificate an asset
- Completed Autism course work or other related course work an asset
- 1 year experience working with persons with challenging behaviour and/or complex needs
- Valid First-Aid / CPR-C Certification required
- Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector clearance required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to foster good working relationships with teachers, students, parents, administrators and other community-based partnerships
- Demonstrated patience and resourcefulness while working with students of different abilities and learning styles
- Self-motivated to carry out any duties as assigned with mínimal supervision or direction
- Strengths-based approach with a compassionate attitude and understanding of child development
- Must be physically able to endure rigorous and constant physical activity
- Ability to lift, assist, or physically support students if required
- May be required to lift up to 50 pounds
- Knowledge and understanding of Hul’q’umi’num’ language, Cowichan culture and traditions
