UBC-Ritsumeikan Academic Exchange Programs
Program Context: The Ritsumeikan Academic Exchange Program (UBC-Rits) is a partnership between UBC and Ritsumeikan University (Kyoto, Japan) that was established in 1991 and is the longest standing cohort-based academic program for international students at UBC. Currently housed in the Faculty of Education, the program is comprised primarily of credit-bearing courses in the Department of Language and Literacy Education (LLED), though it also includes Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Education courses. To date, ~3000 students have participated in the UBC-RITS Academic Exchange Program, and indication of the program’s strengths and its reputational effects for LLED, the Faculty of Education, and UBC more generally. Each year, a cohort of (60-70) Ritsumeikan students typically arrive at UBC in late August, take courses on campus for two terms, and return to Japan in April. Though the UBC-Rits Program does not organize students’ travel, it is responsible for coordinating with on
- and off-campus providers to ensure appropriate accommodation and BC medical insurance are arranged for all members of the cohort (e.g., UBC Student Housing and Community Services; BC Ministry of Health).
Job Summary
The Program Manager (PM) for the UBC-Ritsumeikan Academic Exchange Program is responsible for the comprehensive management and development of the program’s day-to-day operations. This role involves developing and delivering educational advising and student services, coordinating key program events, managing centralized communications, and contributing to the program's strategic development. The PM plays a key role in ensuring the success and well-being of UBC-Ritsumeikan students during their study abroad at UBC, working closely with faculty, staff, and various university units to address and resolve academic, personal, and logístical challenges. Additionally, the PM represents the program in cross-campus committees, advocates for its needs, and maintains close collaboration with the Ritsumeikan International Education Office. The PM also contributes to ongoing program development by participating in strategic discussions and advising on operational matters. This position requires strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, along with a deep understanding of the Program’s goals and student needs.
Organizational Status
Reports to the UBC-Ritsumeikan Program Academic Director (a tenure stream faculty member in the Faculty of Education). Works closely with the Academic Director and Program faculty. Interacts with Faculty of Education and LLED faculty, staff, sessional lecturers, and students. Liaises with UBC Admissions, Enrolment Services, and Student Housing and Community Services, Building Operations, and other units across UBC that are relevant to the operation of the Rits Program.
