**Summary**:
The Controller plays a critical role in ensuring the business operates efficiently, profitably, and in compliance with financial and regulatory standards. This position is responsible for overseeing the company’s financial operations, including the preparation of financial statements, analyses, and reports to guide senior management decision-making. The Controller ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial data, adherence to policies and regulations, and provides strategic financial insights to support the company’s growth and profitability. Key areas of oversight include general accounting, property accounting, internal auditing, payroll, accounts receivable, and accounts payable.

**Responsibilities**:
**Financial Oversight and Reporting**:

- Prepare and analyze timely financial statements and management reports, including cash flow, cost controls, and expenses.
- Ensure proper documentation and record-keeping of financial transactions for auditing and tax purposes.
- Develop and implement finance, accounting, billing, and auditing procedures in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal laws, statutes, and regulations.

**Strategic Planning and Risk Management**:

- Collaborate with senior management on both day-to-day financial operations and long-term strategic planning.
- Identify financial risks (e.g., commodity price fluctuations, environmental risks) and propose mitigation strategies.
- Provide consultative support to strategic initiatives through financial analyses, reports, and recommendations.
- Contribute to the achievement of organizational KPIs and ensure financial department goals align with broader objectives.

**Internal Controls and Asset Management**:

- Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls to safeguard company assets.
- Ensure proper inventory management and control over company assets, supplies, and equipment.
- Recommend and manage improvements in automated financial systems to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

**Team Leadership and Development**:

- Manage, mentor, and develop the finance team through clear job descriptions, professional development opportunities, and regular performance reviews.
- Identify high-potential team members for succession planning and ensure staff are coached and professionally developed.
- Oversee staffing decisions, including hiring, training, and organizing team members to meet operational and strategic goals.

**Budget and Compliance Management**:

- Manage the finance department within approved budgets to maintain efficiency and support growth.
- Ensure adherence to internal control safeguards and compliance with the company’s financial policies.

**External Representation**:

- In collaboration with or directed by the CFO, represent the company externally to government agencies, financing providers, insurance and bonding providers, and clients.

**Job Specifications**:

- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- CPA designation strongly preferred.
- Minimum 10+ years of accounting experience with a strong understanding of financial principles and practices.
- At least 3+ years supervising teams and overseeing financial operations.
- Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in financial reporting.
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills, with a proven track record of building and guiding effective teams.
- Proactive in risk management, financial forecasting, and process improvement.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of presenting financial analysis and providing recommendations to senior management.
- Ability to balance operational and financial objectives to drive organizational success.
- Effective time management and multitasking abilities in a fast-paced environment.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Office and accounting software.
- Experience with ERP systems is an asset.
- Must have valid criminal record check through the National Canadian Policy Information Centre (CPIC).

**Education**:

- Bachelor's Degree (preferred)

**Experience**:

- Accounting: 10 years (preferred)
- Supervising: 3 years (preferred)
- Construction, Industrial, Civil, Mining: 3 years (preferred)

Licence/Certification:

- Chartered Professional Accountant (preferred)
