Position Summary

Reporting to the Lead, the Utility Operations Assistant will play a crucial role in supporting the operations and initiatives of the Utilities Services department. This temporary position offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in the fields of municipal water, wastewater, and storm water servicing, while contributing to the efficient functioning of the department.

Core Accountabilities

Administration of Utility Systems

  • Assist in routine maintenance tasks including painting hydrants, locating, and checking curb stops, equipment maintenance and cleaning.
  • Complete locates of County underground utility infrastructure.
  • Respond to service requests and customer/resident inquiries.
  • Support the organization and analysis of data related to County utility systems. Utilize computer software to input and retrieve information effectively.
  • Assist with monitoring water quality. Collect water samples from various sources and contribute to maintaining accurate records.
  • Participate in community events and educational programs to raise awareness of County programs and initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with the Utility Services team to develop and refine internal procedures, process, and programs.
  • Provide support with water, wastewater, and storm water utility servicing, as required.

Position Requirements

The successful applicant ideally is enrolled in a relevant diploma or degree program (e.g., environmental sciences, water resource management) or have graduated from a relevant program within the past six months. Previous training and experience in water or wastewater treatment with a willingness to learn is an asset.

  • Experience with municipal or provincial levels of government would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team environment.
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills. Be able to present information in a clear and logical way that holds the interest of the audience.
  • Ability to effectively manage workload to ensure timely completion of assigned projects and tasks.
  • Familiarity with utility instrumentation, communications, and controls systems is an asset.
  • Appropriate utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE) required (employee supplies personal CSA footwear | other PPE provided by employer).
  • Perform proficiently using MS Office, GIS, and GPS.
  • Willingness to work outdoors and travel to various locations within the municipality.
  • Must possess a valid class 5 Alberta driver’s license and have access to reliable transportation.
