- Reporting to the Senior Advisor, African Nova Scotian Affairs Integration Office (ANSAIO), the Coordinator, Community Outreach and Research provides expertise to all HRM business units in the development, implementation and support of community engagement initiatives with African Nova Scotian communities and residents of African descent. The position will promote innovative community engagement programs by working with business units to identify opportunities for improved participation and outreach strategies in African Nova Scotian communities. The position is the lead in community outreach and collaboration efforts of the ANSAIO. In addition to providing expertise in community outreach, the coordinator will also lead ongoing analytical and research initiatives to support the implementation of both the ANSAIO strategies and Office of Diversity and Inclusion framework and strategies.**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Maintain a current knowledge of the diversity and inclusion environment in Halifax with an emphasis on the African Nova Scotian Community
- Supports the facilitation of citizen’s participation in democratic debate, service planning, monitoring or evaluation by consulting community groups, utilizing a range of facilitation tools;
- Support innovative community engagement programs and techniques in African Nova Scotian communities
- Support the Senior Advisor ANSAIO to assist business units to identify opportunities for improved participation and outreach strategies in African Nova Scotian and African descent communities
- Support the development and delivery of inclusive public consultation, participation and engagement processes in African Nova Scotian and African descent communities
- Under the guidance of the Senior Advisor ANSAIO, support African Nova Scotian and African descent communities in developing plans for improved service delivery
- Support the Senior Advisor ANSAIO in developing special projects and responding to issues, trends and proposed initiatives identified by Senior staff, HRM business units and Regional Council
- Under the direction of the Senior Advisor ANSAIO develop and support partnerships with community leaders, public/private agencies/non-profit organizations and other levels of government to leverage activities of various partners and to recommend changes to or development of programs, services, municipal policy, and legislation that will improve the quality of life for African Nova Scotian and African descent communities.
- Provide support in the implementation of a municipal ANSAIO strategies
- Contribute to the promotion, implementation and ongoing review of an organization-wide Diversity and Inclusion framework
- Assist in the production of a range of deliverables including reports, presentations and workshops.
- May perform other related duties as assigned.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
**Education and Experience**:
- Undergraduate Degree (preferably in behavioral sciences, human resources management, social sciences, education, communication, human relations, education, or other relevant discipline) with a minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of directly related experience working with African Nova Scotians and African descent peoples and organizations.
- Knowledge and understanding of African Nova Scotians and African descent social, educational and municipal issues, resources, and community.
- Understanding of the cultural diversity among African Nova Scotians and African descent people in Canada and within the Halifax Regional Municipality.
- Knowledge of culturally appropriate ways of working with local African Nova Scotians and African descent communities.
- Strong organizational, written and verbal communications skills, research and problem-solving ability and teamwork
- Facilitation training an asset.
- Experience in the field of equity, inclusion and diversity.
- Experienced and knowledgeable in the design and delivery of culturally relevant programming and community engagement strategies.
- Experience working in a diverse and decentralized organization, ideally in the public sector.
- Experience in dealing with significant organizational change.
- Experience in developing constructive working relationships with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and/or other aspects of human diversity.
- Ability to work within a fast-paced environment with all levels of management and staff performing multi tasks.
- Experience working in a diverse and decentralized organization, ideally in the public sector is considered an asset.
