**Your Opportunity**:
The Edmonton Base Laboratory Microbiology department operates 24/7 in order to provide quality service to acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities, community physicians and regional clients from Central Alberta through remote and rural communities in Northern Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Microbiology partners with our clients to play a key role in training, antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control. The Medical Laboratory Assistant I is primarily responsible for assisting with clerical, supporting lab operational duties and working collaboratively with the Microbiology team. Major Functions and Responsibilities: Determines suitability of specimens submitted by following established policies. Unpacks, sorts, performs data entry and plants a variety of specimens for microbiological and fungal examination / testing according to guidelines outlined. Prepares reagents and stains as required. Adhering to company and department policies and procedures including safety and quality. Where assigned, performs and document quality control and preventative maintenance equipment. Uses Laboratory Information System as required by departmental duties. Operates various technology/equipment which may include: Bactec FX instruments, autoclave, Anoxomat (air removal/replacement system to create anaerobic conditions for incubation), centrifuges, BD Kiestra Total Laboratory Automation system and BD Max molecular platform.

You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

**Required Qualifications**:
Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
**Additional Required Qualifications**:
Excellent customer service skills with both internal and external clients. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Well organized and efficient. Good problem-solving skills with attention to detail. Demonstrates good computer skills. A strong team player with ability to perform duties within a group or independently, Excellent time management skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Must have experience as a Medical Laboratory Assistant I or student practical training as a Medical Laboratory Assistant within the last 2 years including experience within: Evaluation of specimen suitability for testing. Specimen acceptance. LIS data entry processes.
**Preferred Qualifications**:
Leadership or training skills would be an asset.
