**Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction**

Alberta’s Department of Mental Health and Addiction is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction in the development and implementation of the Alberta Recovery Model for mental health and addiction. This responsibility includes developing transformational policy, legislation and standards, monitoring for compliance and data stewardship to support safe, quality care and system planning, and funding and guiding the implementation of services and supports across the continuum of care from prevention and early intervention to treatment and recovery.

The Department works with the newly established Recovery Alberta and the new Canadian Centre of Recovery Excellence (which together with the Department constitute the Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction), and community service providers and partners across the province to enhance Alberta’s mental health and addiction system, leveraging policy, practice innovations and research and evaluation to enable the best possible outcomes for Albertans.

The Department works closely with other cross-government partners, agencies, external organizations, other Canadian provinces and territories, and the Government of Canada to plan and coordinate addiction and mental health service delivery. It also liaises with the Office of the Alberta Health Advocates, regulatory bodies, and others.

**Role Responsibilities**:
Working with the Executive Director of the Community Response and Programs Branch, the Director of Policy and Program Development leads several functions to successfully design, implement and oversee unique, landmark programs such as recovery communities, therapeutic living units in correctional institutions, recovery coaches, and province-wide capacity building efforts to drive the Alberta Recovery Model within the context of government-wide strategic frameworks guiding the provincial addiction and mental health system.

As director, you will collaborate with the branch leadership team to integrate and leverage the efforts of your unit and the branch as a whole to meet business and system goals and priorities. Advice and recommendations are provided to the Executive Director and other internal and external senior stakeholders to inform strategic decision making and directions. Positive, collaborative relationships are sustained with executive and senior management in Mental Health and Addiction, other ministries, senior management of Recovery Alberta, Indigenous communities with Department-funded bed-based services, and senior leaders in key external stakeholder groups.

In this role, the director represents the branch and Department on cross-ministry initiatives, departmental teams, and provincial/national committees. Additionally, the director sets short and long-range business goals for the Policy and Program Development Unit and communicates strategic messaging and ministry goals and mandates to staff.

As Director of Policy and Program Development, you will be accountable for the following key leadership activities in the branch, including:

- Advising staff on special projects, grant issues, stakeholder engagement, and tactics.
- Participating in committees, representing the ministry and branch.
- Managing strategic relationships with external and internal stakeholders.
- Leading unit/staff administration and human resources.
- Providing branch leadership.
