D U T I E S
Reporting to the General Counsel, the Associate Legal Counsel will provide legal services in a
multi-disciplinary, team focused and supportive work environment. This role is critical to providing
efficient, effective and timely legal advice. The incumbent will provide legal advice and drafting
support on a broad range of issues with a strong focus on issues related to discrimination,
harassment, accommodation and the interpretation and implementation of our Respectful
Workplace and Learning Environment Policy. This includes advising on conflict resolution
processes and conducting internal investigations where appropriate. The incumbent will provide
support to General Counsel and RRC Polytech's leaders to develop legal strategies and
solutions, preparing written or verbal opinions, conducting internal investigations, acting for RRC
Polytech before administrative bodies such as the Human Rights Commission and performing
legal research in a broad range of areas relevant to Post Secondary educational institutions. The
Associate Legal Counsel is a key member of the legal team who must foster and maintain positive
relationships with campus and community stakeholders.
- R E Q U I R E D Q U A L I F I C A T I O N S- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (J.D.)
- Member in good standing with the Law Society of Manitoba or another Canadian jurisdication
- with the ability to become a Member in Manitoba- Several years experience as a practicing lawyer with a focus on human rights, employment and
- administrative law. A background in corporate, commercial law may be considered.- Comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Manitoba Human Rights Code,

the Workplace Safety and Health Act, the Red River College Polytechnic Act, The Advanced
Education Administration Act, the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act among
others
- Strong analytical skills, with an understanding of administrative law processes and procedural

fairness
- Ability and aptitude for recognizing, investigating, analyzing problems, and for developing

innovative solutions to complex situations
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to build trusting relationships and engage

various stakeholders
- Exceptional communication skills, including verbal, written and listening skills with the ability to

share legal information and findings of fact with a non-legal audience
- Understanding of the principles of accommodation and experience providing advice to clients

related to accommodation issues
- Ability to research, develop and present training programs, policies, and best practices
- Ability to work with sensitive information in a confidential manner
- Ability to research, develop and present training programs, policies, and best practices
- Ability to build trusting relationships and engage with various stakeholders
- Experience building a respectful workplace culture that promotes diversity, learning

and continuous improvement
- A S S E T S- Recent experience in gathering and assessing information and leading and conducting neutral

workplace investigations. Recent experience advising on neutral workplace investigations or
other forms of neutral investigations will be considered.
