Pleasant Heights After School is a non-denominational charitable organization providing before and afterschool childcare for families in Calgary. Pleasant Heights After School (PHAS) was one of the first childcare companies to provide before and after school care for families in northwest Calgary, opening in 1976. Today, PHAS provides childcare to over 200 children in kindergarten to grade 6 across all three locations.
Over the years, PHAS has delivered innovative and age-appropriate care to thousands of children ages 5 to 12. Our diverse and innovative programs support families and meet the needs of children in a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment. From physical literacy to arts and crafts, PHAS activities are designed to help children become strong, independent, life-long learners. PHAS incorporates STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) concepts into all our school-age programs and uses the Alberta Childcare Framework: Flight. STEAM is designed to engage young minds and develop practical skills through curiosity and self-directed discovery, in tandem with organic child-led unstructured play.
**Role Mandate**
Early Childhood Educators plan, organize, and implement programs for children between the ages of 5 and 12 years, before and after regular school hours. They are key members of the childcare team and serve as public representatives of the organization.
**Role Description**:
- Early Childhood Educators plan, implement, and lead engaging programs for children aged 5-12 in a safe and inclusive environment. They support children’s physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development while fostering collaborative relationships with families, colleagues, and the community. Educators may assist with program planning, provide hands-on care, and ensure adherence to health and safety standards. Employees at PHAS are typically assigned to a central location that is consistent; however, occasional shift needs may vary, and staff are expected to work at other locations when required for short periods of time.
- Each employee is a PHAS employee and not an employee of the central location; however, it is imperative that each staff member gets familiar with one central location’s routines and children as a primary goal.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
**Education and Certification**
- Government of Alberta Early Childhood Educator Certification of Level 1 or willingness to obtain certification within 6 months of employment.
- Standard Child Care First Aid and CPR Certification.
- Successful completion of a Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search.

**Experience**
- Experience in a licensed child care setting an asset
- Experience with School-Age children an asset
**Competencies and Attributes**
- Working knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices for school-aged children
- Availability before and/or after school hours, and during school closures
- Willingness to work directly with children both indoors and outdoors
- Ability to take initiative and work independently
**Position Details**
**Early Childhood Educator (Level 1)**:
The Level 1 ECE workers are essential to PHAS, with a primary goal of quality care for children in a ratio of 1:13. They have support from Level 3 ECE staff, on-location Site Coordinators (Managers), and the Assistant Director. This role is ideal for those who enjoy hands-on work with children without heavy involvement in administration and planning.
Duties include:
- Support early childhood educators in carrying out programs that promote the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development of children.
- Engage children in activities by telling stories, teaching songs, playing games, supervising non-structured play, assisting with field trip supervision, and preparing crafts.
- Utilize the Alberta Childcare Framework: Flight (training provided).
- Prepare snacks and arrange rooms or furniture for use.
- Assist with proper eating and hygiene habits.
- Maintain program equipment and assist in cleaning the spaces.
- Attend staff meetings to discuss progress and concerns of children.
- May assist early childhood educators or supervisors in keeping records.
**How to Apply**
**Equal Opportunity Employer**
We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace that celebrates diversity and provides equal opportunities for all employees. As many of our families are also diverse in background, we feel especially proud to reflect the community we serve in our staffing. People of all backgrounds bring assets to PHAS, and we encourage positive cultural influences in our programs intentionally.
