Play a key role in supporting the overall growth of the company by developing, implementing, and maintaining H&S systems across our operations and project activities.
Reporting to the Chief Safety Officer, the H&S Coordinator will conduct regular site visits to ensure all work under Mott Electric is performed safely and offer support to the field. The H&S Coordinator will ensure employees comply with Mott Electric’s and the Clients’ expectations, policies, safe work practices and procedures, and that all work is planned and executed according to Mott Electric, the client, and legislation.
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Collaborate with divisions to promote a safety-first culture throughout the organization
- Conduct regular audits of sites to ensure compliance with the company’s H&S program and Regulations
- Complete safety observation reports for each site visit and review findings with site supervisor and project manager
- Provide recommendations for improving safety in the workplace
- Educate employees on the company rules, policies and expectations, and established safe work procedures
- Identify training needs and coordinate with operations and site supervisor
- Interpret applicable health and safety legislation as it applies to the workplace
- Provide H&S Department and upper management with trends observed in the field and solutions to help improve overall safety
- Assist supervisors and/or project managers with overall project hazard assessments, site-specific safety plans (e.g. confined space, fall protection, etc.), and site safety board during project start-up
- Offer support at site level when requested by the field or management
- Perform fit tests for workers when required
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses, and prepare detailed reports with recommended corrective actions
- Review safety documentation to ensure they are being completed according to Mott standards & follow up when required
- Participate in Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee Meetings, Division Meetings, Bi-weekly Health and Safety Meetings as required, etc.
- Maintain safety documentation and communication logs regularly
- Assist in the development and implementation of safety policies, procedures, and programs.
- Assist injured workers to positively and safely remain at, or return to work when required
- Facilitate Young and New Worker Orientations
- Monitor and update safety data sheets (SDS) and ensure proper labeling of hazardous materials
- Participate in the development of emergency response plans and conduct regular drills
- Perform other duties as required.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
- OHS certificate/diploma/degree
- 3+ years of experience in the construction industry, electrical experience preferred
- Training in confined space, fall protection, fit test (train the trainer) and first aid preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively at all levels
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
- Strong leadership skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams
- Analytical with problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Passionate philosophy and vision for Health and Safety and how it relates to organizational culture.
**WORKING CONDITIONS**
- Position will require mainly working in the field (~70% of time) and working from the Burnaby office.
- Start time will typically be 8:00 am with some flexibility
