**Duties and Responsibilities**:
Community Outreach & Relationship Building
- Engage with local schools, Knowledge Keepers, and community organizations to collaboratively support student learning, cultural understanding, and community well-being through authentic, long-term relationships
- Coordinate and participate in community events, maintaining a calendar of key school, cultural, and ceremonial gatherings
- Integrate Indigenous protocols (e.g., offering gifts, honoraria) to acknowledge and respect local traditions and shared histories
- Facilitate circle teachings and inclusive practices to honor the diversity of Indigenous perspectives
- Promote the “All My Relations” worldview by recognizing the interconnectedness of students, families, and communities
Application & Transition Support
- Work closely with families and community members by providing accurate information about financial aid, scholarships, and funding opportunities, ensuring they feel supported and informed
- Address and dispel common misconceptions about college affordability or program suitability
- Collaborate with college staff to co-create culturally responsive engagement activities that prepare students for orientation, summer programs, and bridging experiences
- Provide continued support for accepted and registered students, ensuring they feel prepared and connected before their first semester begins
Interactive Learning for College Readiness
- Designs and delivers interactive workshops that demystify college life, showcase academic programs, and integrate Indigenous teachings such as life cycle teachings and the 7 Grandfather Teachings
- Emphasizes shared learning experiences—such as circles or storytelling—to deepen student engagement and reduce anxiety about college transitions
- Uses experiential learning methods to spark student curiosity, build confidence, and foster self-reflection
- Engages parents, guardians, and community members to foster communal support and alignment with traditional values
Culturally Affirming Advising to Prospective Students
- Provides one-on-one consultations to help students identify their strengths, cultural values, beliefs and community-related aspirations and align them with academic pathways leading to college studies
- Embeds reflective practice and critical thinking, encouraging students to shape their own educational journeys
- Works in partnership with Indigenous high school and post-secondary coaches to support course planning, scholarship navigation, and key deadlines
**Qualifications**:
- Post-secondary 2-year diploma p referably in Human Services, Business, Communications, Marketing or related discipline
- Indigenous knowledge which includes an understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, protocols, and values obtained through lived experience
- Minimum 2 years’ of relevant experience in student recruitment, Indigenous community engagement, or similar positions within educational or Indigenous community-based settings. This experience should demonstrate a strong track record in planning and executing outreach events within Indigenous communities, and a solid understanding of Indigenous culturally responsive practices
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- Lived experience as an Indigenous student, with a thorough understanding of the unique challenges of being an Indigenous student at a western higher education institution
- Proven experience in guiding prospective students through the transition from high school to college—by coordinating multi-faceted initiatives, problem solving, and effectively communicating both verbally and in writing—is essential
