**Position Description**:
The Laboratory Technician, reporting to the Team Leader and/or Resource Technologist, collects, receives, accessions and sorts specimens for testing. The Laboratory Technician is responsible for and performs a variety of laboratory procedures under the direct supervision of a Lead, Laboratory Technician. The position supports a 24 hour / 7 days a week operation working all shifts on a rotational basis including weekends and holidays as scheduled. The Laboratory Technician will work in Bacteriology, Media Preparation and Molecular Microbiology within the Division of Microbiology.
**Here’s What You’ll Get To Do**
- Practice and perform a variety of laboratory procedures with accuracy and efficiency in accordance with the policies, processes and procedures of the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine
- Maintain competence in the receiving, handling, processing, identification, recording, labeling and dispatch of specimens for laboratory testing
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment according to DPLM procedures
- Recognize failure, troubleshoot, take appropriate corrective action and maintain documentation of laboratory equipment
- Actively participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement activities to meet DPLM objectives
- Recognize unusual situations and reports immediately to an MLT
- Work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Recognize unsafe work practices, potential hazards and unusual occurrences in the work area
- Assist in maintaining inventory control to ensure availability of adequate reagents and supplies
- Maintain competency as a Laboratory Technician through participation in training and continuing education
- Participate in special projects or other duties as assigned by an MLT, Resource Technologist or Team Leader
- Follow all aspects of the Quality System
**Here’s What You’ll Need**
- Completion of high school (Ontario Secondary School diploma or equivalent)
- Certification or registration as a Laboratory Technician with the Medical Laboratory Professionals' Association of Ontario (MLPAO) preferred
- Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience with lab systems and processes
- Strong typing/data entry skills
- Ability to be a team player
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Critical thinking skills
- Attention to detail and high accuracy
- Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable
- Good manual dexterity and visual interpretation skills
