BCIT’s **School of Construction** is seeking a **regular, full-time (1.0 **FTE**) Field Assignment Assistant.** This role resides in the Renewable Resources Department in BCIT’s School of Construction and the Environment. The Renewable Resources Department is comprised of four programs including Fish, Wildlife and Recreation, Forest and Natural Area Management Diplomas, and a Bachelor and Master in Ecological Restoration. This permanent, full-time role** **provides assistance to staff and students in their field-based courses and assignments, maintains equipment and leads safety initiatives for the programs.**Duties & Responsibilities**

**DUTIES** **AND**

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Collaborates with faculty to support student applied learning in-regard-to the use of field equipment and safety procedures required in natural resource management.
- Manages field lab equipment reservations including digital software bookings and signing out and receiving equipment bookings for faculty and students.
- Conducts or coordinates field lab equipment maintenance and repairs.
- Sources and/or Creates training videos, written instructions and assessments on equipment use for the purpose of educating equipment users.
- Manages vehicles by conducting or scheduling maintenance as needed, ensuring insurance is up-to-date, and scheduling regular provincial commercial vehicle inspections.
- Plans and executes safe, effective, and efficient storage of field lab equipment and supplies including maintaining clean, organised and safe equipment storage areas.
- Uses, maintains, and updates an online equipment inventory and booking database.
- Procures and disposes of field lab equipment, materials, and tools in coordination with faculty.
- Monitors supplies and maintains adequate quantities.
- Oversees the discretionary FAA equipment budget as determined by the program areas on a yearly basis
- Oversees the record-keeping of field lab permits.
- Informs faculty when purchase orders are needed and prepares purchase requisitions.
- Recommends new equipment purchases to Programs/Department.
- Stays current on emerging technology and regulatory requirements, including changes to standards and regulations related to the equipment and supplies used in natural resource management.
- Researches, revises, and maintains the standards and quality of field lab equipment and use.
- Develops and maintains safe operating procedures for all equipment used by the department and instructs students on the safe operating procedures for all equipment used by the department.
- Develops and maintains an equipment training record system for both faculty and students.
- When appropriate, support tailgate safety meetings in conjunction with the instructor and acts as a first aid attendant during field labs.
- Attends Program and Department meetings as relevant and needed.
- Performs other work-related duties as may be assigned.

**Qualifications**

**QUALIFICATIONS**:
- Two (2) years’ experience as a field technician in natural resource management plus one (1) additional year of post-secondary education or diploma of technology. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
- Superior interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively, professionally and respectfully with students and instructors.
- Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills, including experience with filing systems (both digital and paper-based).
- Must be able to prioritize daily workload and possess good time management skills with an ability to set and change priorities and exercise sound judgment.
- Must be self-motivated, have initiative, and be able to make logical decisions. Understanding of unique needs, priorities, and challenges of educational institutions.
- Experience in natural resource measurement techniques, for example, assessment of soils, hydrology, water quality, plants, fish, wildlife and geospatial parameters.
- Able to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Able to travel for one-day or multi-day field trips and willingness to work outside of normal work hours.
- Level 1 Occupational First-Aid certification or willing to obtain
- A valid BC Class 5 driver’s license.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a large team setting.

**PREFERRED** **QUALIFICATIONS**
- Experience in the natural resource industry and with the use of related equipment, such as chainsaws, digital mapping, small engines, boats, environmental monitoring sensors, and associated equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, update and license a variety of computer software and to self-learn new systems.
- Class 4 driver’s license (condition of employment within 6 months)
- Level 2 or 3 Occupational First Aid or 40-hours Wilderness First Aid.
