**Manager, Vessel Operations**:
The Manager, Vessel Operations is a central leadership role in the operation of both the marine fleet and maintaining marine structures at Seaspan terminals. This position requires to be available for emergencies and operational related concerns to respond 24 hours per day - 7 days per week. With responsibilities for hiring and scheduling crew, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance and budget preparation, this role focuses on efficient operations and on-time service for customers. This position splits time equally between shore based and shipboard activities and works closely with Masters and their crews to advance and improve both working relationships and company policies.
**Duties and Accountabilities**
- Manages operation of vessels through Port Captains and operational supervision of the marine fleet and crews.
- Reviews and authorizes purchase requests and manages annual budget. Develops inventory control procedures that protect company assets from theft, misuse or abuse.
- Collaborates on the development, implementation and maintenance of the marine fleet operational policy. Ensures all vessels are prepared for Transport Canada inspection.
- Ensures continuous development of employees through effective leadership, conducts performance assessments.
- Ensures workplace safety by implementing and monitoring the Safety Management System for main vessels and care, including safety meetings and onboard visits.
- Conducts post-incident investigation to determine root causes of the incident. Provides recommendations and develops corrective measures to prevent future incidents.
- Oversees the operations contingency plan and acts as the Incident Commander during emergency and salvage response situations, which includes implementation of the Incident Commander System.
- Provides support for collective agreements negotiation and administration.
- Advises on planning of maintenance, repair and building of marine structures and related systems to ensure operational efficiency and reducing maintenance cost.
- Keeps up to date with trends and legislative changes that may have an impact on Seaspan operations.
**Qualification Requirements**
- Masters Certificate or Post-secondary diploma in Marine Engineering or Technology.
- Minimum 10 years of vessel operations and crew management experience in unionized environment including 5 years in progressively senior positions (marine and transportation industry preferred), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
**Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies**
- Technical skills in vessel operations management, including knowledge of the Ship Masters business and proper running of vessel.
- Knowledge of nautical matters with specialty focus on ship handling and piloting of vessels.
- Understanding of all applicable Legislations, Acts and Regulations for marine operations.
- Ability to communicate clearly, both written and verbal.
- Ability to lead, motivate and gain respect and trust.
- Ability to mentor, train and transfer knowledge.
- Project and financial management skills.
- Advanced computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook).
