**Position - Intermediate Marine Biologist - Marine Construction**
Corvidae is expanding our role in marine construction consulting and we are looking for the next great team member to join us. We are the “consultant of choice” for a major marine construction firm who bring us to the table at project onset to find solutions and navigate projects from start to finish. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a difference on a fast paced, solution oriented team that supports each other through it all.
As the Intermediate Marine Biologist for Marine Construction, you will bring your proven abilities in assessing, permitting, managing and monitoring marine construction projects to our flexible, fast paced and solution oriented team. Your expertise in marine construction will focus on managing project deliverables at the federal and provincial regulatory levels, leading biophysical assessment programs, developing monitoring programs and coordination/logistics related to execution of the monitoring programs.
As Intermediate Marine Biologist for Marine Construction you will have the opportunity to become deeply integrated into project teams at the design stage to collaborate on solutions for how projects get built. You will work with our Senior Environmental Construction Manager and exercise independent judgement to analyze issues, interpret information and recommend solutions. You will lead communications with contractors and owner representatives regarding upcoming activities, associated potential environmental impacts and work with them to solve constraints. We will also look to you for support and leadership on building project budgets, writing environmental management plans and developing and maintaining great relationships with regulators associated with marine construction.
Summary of duties:
- Engage with owners and contractors at project outset to get a complete picture of the project design and construction methodology proposed for projects.
- Review construction drawings and identify environmental impacts and related construction constraints. Relay identified constraints to the project team - with solutions
- Based on project scope, determine approach for biophysical assessment to support construction related permitting - mainly DFO Request for Reviews with some municipal permitting and occasionallyBC MoF Section 11 Authorizations. Establish assessment timing, data capture requirements and methodology, resources and personnel needed.
- Utilize your proven abilities to generate detailed descriptions of the biological and physical characteristics of marine construction project areas. You will lead biophysical assessments for projects - knowledge of marine SARA species, their habitats, life cycles and interactions with the local marine environment is key. Identify backshore vegetation as well as foreshore and subtidal substrate composition and habitat components including macroalgae, invertebrates and fish species.
- Once permitting is in place you will work with the construction team to ensure they understand all the project related requirements of the permits (pressure mitigation, soft start / ramp ups, equipment positioning, exclusion zones, etc) so that when construction starts they have a clear plan that keeps them constructing as efficiently as possible.
- You will design and oversee marine mammal monitoring programs and all measures outlined in DFO Letters of Advice for piling operations. Includes determining exclusion zones, monitoring locations, managing hydrophone data and establishing mitigations for on the fly adjustments.
There will also be opportunities to collaborate with and be supported by our team on a variety of other projects based on team needs including, terrestrial construction monitoring, wildlife assessments, breeding bird surveys - really it depends on what you bring to the table. We work on a wide variety of interesting and technically challenging projects and will fit you in in a way that is meaningful for all of us.
We create the space to excel and you go for it; that’s how we roll and we have your back 100% when your decisions are based on our Core Values. What are Corvidae’s core values you ask? Here you go:
Solution Focused. Protection of the Environment. Open Communication. Absolute integrity. Respect.
