**job summary**

Under the direction of the Senior Administrator, the Lands and Resources Coordinator is responsible for the management of all Kwakiutl First Nations (KFN) Lands and Resources. Along with developing and implementing a lands and resources plan, this role is responsible for implementing, to the greatest extent from a lands and resources perspective, the Douglas Treaty.

  • Develop and implement a Lands and Resources Plan for the Kwakiutl First Nation
  • Monitor all natural resources and activities throughout the KFN territory and promote sustainable and culturally appropriate development
  • Ensure that the lands and resources are being utilized in a manner that is consistent with KFN’s culture, values, sovereignty and priorities
  • Assists in the negotiation of Impact Benefits Agreements, and other agreements as needed
  • Plans, manages, and is accountable for budget and expenses of the Lands and Resources Department
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates lands and resources policies and procedures including identifying and initiating new policy development where required
  • Research new funding opportunities and prepare proposals
  • Engages in the consultation process with local, provincial and federal governments and corporations regarding Aboriginal Rights and Title issues, including accommodation
  • Works cooperatively with Chief and Council, Senior Administrator, Economic Development Manager, Fisheries Manager/Coordinator, and others to ensure appropriate collaboration and coordination of policies and activities with these respective departments
  • Liaises with First Nations, industry and various levels of government, providing educational advice for Chief and Council and staff on issues relating to lands and resources
  • Schedules, delivers and facilitates the community engagement process
  • Conducts any or all other relevant duties as requested by Senior Administrator

**requirements**

  • Degree in Biology, Natural Resource management, Environmental management, Registered Professional Forester, Anthropology, or Land-Use Planning, or a combination of Education and Experience
  • Minimum 2-3 years experience in a related field
  • Knowledge of applicable acts, including relevant case law, and regulations as it relates to lands and resource use and development
  • Comprehensive knowledge related to lands and resources in the following areas: Government and Policies/Programs, Sustainable Development, Traditional Use Studies, First Nations Concerns/Objectives, Socio-economic development, Culture and Environmental Assessment, Aboriginal Rights and Title, Self Government
  • Experience working with or for First Nations
  • Strong working knowledge of the Douglas Treaties
  • Training in GPS and GIS is an asset
  • Ability to multi-talk, working on multiple projects simultaneously with the ability to prioritize deadlines
  • Self motivated with the ability to work towards both short
  • and long-term goals
  • Experience working with MS Office Suite
  • Strong Communication skills
  • writing, public speaking, active listening are important to this role
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
