**Position Overview**
- Our Parks department has a regular full-time opportunity for a Trades 1 - Carpenter. This is skilled and semi-skilled carpentry work below journeyman level which involves the use of hand or power tools in the performance of a variety of woodworking and related tasks. The incumbent will repair and construct a variety of articles for Parks operations, such as steps, tool boxes, small sheds and structures, barricades and signs; check, repair, assemble and install playground and sports equipment, and perform a variety of carpentry and maintenance tasks on Corporate buildings and structures. The incumbent is also responsible for safety inspections, and maintaining records of safety inspections, relating to playground equipment, play courts, and related Parks structures. The incumbent uses considerable independence and judgement with more complex matters being referred to a supervisor for direction and guidance.

**The successful applicant will possess**:

- Considerable knowledge of the safety standards, practices, methods, and inspection practices as they relate to Playground or Park equipment or structures;
- Considerable knowledge of the Canadian Playgrounds Safety Standards;
- Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the carpentry trade;
- Sound knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions of the carpentry trade;
- The ability to understand and carry out effectively oral and written instructions accompanied by sketches and blueprints;
- The ability to sharpen planer and joiner blades and assist in setting and sharpening saws;
- The ability to direct the work of one of more helpers as required;
- Skill in the use and care of hand and bench tools and related equipment essential to woodworking

**Qualifications**
- Completion of the 10th grade, preferably supplemented by technical courses related to the work, and considerable experience in carpentry, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License is required.
