Job Summary
Within the context of an integrated and collaborative stepped care model and in accordance with established standards of practice and the vision and values of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Wellness Advisors triage students seeking mental health support. Conduct initial assessments, determine the level(s) of support on the stepped care continuum that will best meet students’ needs and develop care plans with them. Perform a variety of counselling and outreach functions as time permits. Understand the role for Wellness Advisors and practices within the integrated and collaborative stepped care model.

Organizational Status
Reports to the Associate Director, Clinical Services. Collaborates with referral resources including other mental health care providers, Academic Advisors, Enrolment Services Professionals, Residence Life Managers and Student Support Services Managers. Establishes, maintains and enhances relationships/communication with UBC Vancouver Centre for Accessibility, Student Health Services, Health Promotion and Education, Conduct & Safety and the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office.

Work Performed

1. Triages students presenting with mental health and wellbeing concerns:
- Collects and reviews pertinent information/history, drawing on knowledge of mental health and counselling knowledge and skills when making an initial assessment through a structured judgment process.- Determines the need for emergent crisis intervention, facilitates urgent and non-urgent referrals.- Develops initial care plan with the student.

2. Works in collaboration with campus and community stakeholders to provide optimal mental health support for students:
- Collaborates with referral sources including other mental health care providers, academic advisors, Enrolment Services Professionals, Residence Life Managers and Student Support Services Managers.- Consults with UBC and other mental health care professionals as appropriate.- Maintains up-to-date and comprehensive information (e.g. services provided, referral procedures etc.) on faculty-based and central student services as well as community based mental health services to facilitate seamless referral to resources and services.- Establishes, maintains and enhances relationships/communication with UBC Vancouver Centre for Accessibility, Student Health Services, Health Promotion and Education and Conduct & Safety.

3. Performs indirect service responsibilities effectively and efficiently:
- Creates and maintains student records including assessments and referrals as well as appointment information in accordance with established professional standards and unit policies and procedures.- Participates in team meetings, by providing input, and presenting relevant material to promote optimal support for students.- Engages in ongoing team planning, development, evaluation and quality improvement activities that facilitate team goal setting, problem solving, conflict resolution and collaboration.- Maintains and updates professional competency in mental health issues and treatments; reviews relevant literature and participates in professional development.

4. Supports student mental health wellbeing by participating in health promotion and wellbeing programming including facilitating workshops and staffing orientation events as time permits.

5. Provides drop-in, single session counselling and facilitates group counselling programs as time permits.

6. Other duties as assigned.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
