Facilities Management is responsible for the planning, development, engineering, construction, operation, maintenance and stewardship of all the buildings, infrastructure, sites and services within Western’s campus community. FM departments include the AVP’s office, Facilities Development & Engineering, Power Plant, Business Operations, Sustainability, Building Services, Facilities Operations and Parking & Visitor Services. Our integrated team provides exceptional service in creating and maintaining Western’s facilities and in serving the community.

**Responsibilities**:
The Health and Safety Manager for Facilities Management (Manager) will contribute to the overall health and safety of faculty, staff, students, and various internal and external parties who work on, learn at, or visit the University of Western Ontario’s campus. The Manager will promote compliance with University policies, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and Regulations, relevant licenses, other applicable legislation and safety standards, and will promote and develop policies and procedures related to health and safety within the Facilities Management (FM) portfolio. The Manager will identify hazards and recommend controls for health, safety, and environmental risks related to work delivered or performed by FM to prevent accidents, injury, and occupational illness. The Manager will work collaboratively with the Western Health, Safety and Well-being team to develop risk assessments, arrange for and/or provide training, conduct safety reviews, as well as identify and appropriately address various hazards as required.

The Manager will provide consultations, workplace, and construction site assessments and provide technical guidance on safe work procedures. The Manager will also participate in incident response, investigations, and site inspections, as well as prepare related reports and audits and provide recommendations and strategies regarding health and safety. The Manager will liaise with the Western University Health, Safety and Well-being team, as well as participate on various University committees such as the Joint Occupational Health Safety Committee (JOHSC) and other safety committees as appropriate

**Qualifications**:
**Education**:

- Undergraduate Degree in relevant field
- Relevant designation completed or working towards (e.g. CRSP, CIH, or NCSO)
- Certified Committee Member for Joint Occupational Health and Safety
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods certification
- Undergraduate Degree, focus in Science, Engineering, Industrial Safety, Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or Occupational Health Sciences is preferred
- COR training courses is preferred

**Experience**:

- 5 years of progressive industry experience in the field of Occupational Health & Safety
- Experience participating in safety management processes, and completing audits and inspections
- Experience leading training, safety committees, working groups, and projects
- Experience leading safety management processes, change management, and completing audits and inspections is preferred
- Experience providing industrial safety training preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- In-depth knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Environmental Protection Act, Public Health Agency of Canada guidelines, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations, and other relevant legislation and regulations
- Driver’s license (G) and maintain clean driver’s abstract
- Familiarity with hazards and associated risks in a teaching and research environment
- Competency and confidence to influence diverse groups to support existing and new initiatives
- Knowledge of techniques for planning, managing, and coordinating multiple projects, often with competing priorities that involve a variety of parties
- Well-developed presentation skills with demonstrated ability to conduct training sessions, instruct, and influence others
- Ability to provide advice on the proper and safe use of materials and equipment and ensure a safe environment by identifying, resolving, and reporting safety hazards
- Ability to adhere to legislated safety requirements and Western safety policies
