Outreach Worker

The Community Outreach Worker will work with the family unit to support parents and children with a philosophy of building on strengths, supporting families to address challenges, helping to maintain the family unit intact, and ensuring the safety and well-being of children. This position will provide emergency outreach support services to children and families outside of traditional working hours in times of family crisis for the families residing in the Agency’s fostering families coming home programs.
**Major Duties and Responsibilities**:
- Provide after care support to assist with maintaining the family unit once families graduate from the Agency’s fostering families coming home program.
- Support families with a philosophy of building on strengths, supporting challenges, and promoting community inclusion and interdependence.
- Work with families on a one-on-one basis in their own homes in order to teach them positive parenting and coping skills that will help build independence.
- Assist families to improve their understanding of child development and needs.
- Help families develop safety plans and care plans to ensure the safety of their children.
- Work with various professionals and support agencies to assist the family to meet their daily living, health, financial and social needs, therefore reducing the stress on families.
- Assist parents or care givers to access services or supports offered through CUMFI Wellness Center, addictions or treatment programs.
- Teach families where to access community support networks, and to how to maintain those support networks to reduce their isolation from the community.
- Help families to build independence by encouraging them in skills that allow them to work out their own solutions whenever possible.
- Provide quarterly progress reports to the Ministry of the goals established with each family.
- Track themes of the issues that arise for families and make recommendations for managing these issues to the Ministry.
- Will be required to manage changing environments, schedules and adapt to various locations within the organization.
- Other duties related to this position, as directed by the Director.

**Qualifications and Training**:
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related field of study and/or a suitable combination of training and extensive experience in working with individuals who have been involved in a high risk lifestyle.
- Ability to speak an Indigenous language is an asset.
- Knowledge and understanding of the history of Aboriginal peoples and their socio-economic backgrounds.
- An understanding of the barriers to healthy living that can contribute to higher risk for child abuse and neglect.
- An understanding of child development and age-appropriate developmental needs of children.
- Must possess an understanding of positive and culturally appropriate approaches to parenting.
- Must be knowledgeable of the dynamics of living with HIV/AIDS.
- Must be knowledgeable of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and other cognitive disabilities.
- Must have knowledge of both solution focused and strength based theories.
- Knowledge of alcohol/drug recovery and relapse dynamics is an asset.
- Awareness of the services and resources available within the community of Saskatoon.
- Must be comfortable working with and providing intensive supports to families within their own homes and in the core neighborhoods of Saskatoon.
- Willing and available to work non-traditional hours such as evenings and weekends.
