**Job Summary**: Phoenix Supportive Housing Program (PSHP) is comprised of two residential programs that offer long-term housing for youth aged 16-24. This position will work primarily with Phoenix House, a transitional residence for 10 youth working towards an eventual goal of independent living. Through 24/7 support, Phoenix House offers safe, supportive housing for youth learning skills for independent living. PSHP’s second residential program is Phoenix Homes for Independence (PHI), a program for ten youth living in three homes who are transitioning from semi-independent living to independent living.
The Weekend Overnight Worker (50%) is responsible for offering assistance, crisis intervention, and support to youth staying at the house overnight. The Weekend Overnight Worker must maintain wakefulness for the entire shift.
**Reports to**: Manager, Phoenix House
**Location**: Hunter Street, Halifax
**Compensation**:$24.62/hour plus 4% vacation pay, Employee and Family Assistance Program, in-house trainings.
**Hours of Work**: 40 hours every second week: Fridays from 11:30pm-7:40am and Saturdays 7:40pm-7:40am.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Ensure the program is congruent with Phoenix’s vision and values.
- Work in accordance with Phoenix’s policies, procedures, and framework of practice.
- Supervise and monitor Phoenix House’s weekend and overnight activities and ensure that policies, security, and safety are maintained.
- Work with youth to support the implementation of effective case plans that address the challenges of youth who experience homelessness.
- Provide support and crisis intervention for youth.
- Assist with engaging youth in life skill development and goal planning opportunities that support independent living.
- Provide a supportive environment that promotes youth empowerment.
- Complete nightly or weekly medication counts as required.
- Work as a team with other weekend staff and provide support and guidance to relief staff as needed.
- Complete and maintain all logs, files and records as required and ensure confidentiality is protected.
- Contribute to building maintenance to ensure a therapeutic milieu.
- Support program development, including attendance at biweekly team meetings, and ensure that a quality effective and client directed program is delivered.
- Train new staff, field placement students and volunteers as required.
- Commit to ongoing professional development and personal reflection towards an anti-oppressive approach to practice.
- Liaise with other agencies on behalf of youth and programs and participate in community committees, projects, or activities as appropriate.
**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS**
- Demonstrated high level of understanding of youth development and the issues of homelessness.
- Demonstrated exceptional level of interpersonal, communication, youth service and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated skill using anti-oppressive practice (harm reduction, narrative practice, a client-directed approach, and a social justice perspective).
- Knowledge of mental health issues, substance abuse and crisis intervention.
- Comfort and ability to work independently.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Outlook and using the Internet.
- Demonstrated knowledge of community resources and the social service delivery system is an asset.
**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**
- Bachelor of Social Work, or an undergraduate degree and Human Services diploma or other relevant undergraduate degree, (or working towards).
- Registration or Candidacy for Registration, certification, or membership of a related professional body (if applicable).
- Experience working in a youth residential setting.
