The Internet Archive, a nonprofit digital library, is seeking a mission-oriented Legal Counsel to join our legal team. This is a full-time, fully remote position within the United States, offering a salary range of $110k-$140k based on experience. The Legal Counsel will collaborate with various teams across the organization, including Finance, Collections, Scanning & Digitization, Development, Patron Services, and our subscription web archiving program, Archive-It, as well as the management team. Our legal team is comprised of three in-house lawyers, operates remotely but requires attendance at weekly legal team meetings and regular meetings with supported teams. Occasional travel to the San Francisco Bay Area for onsite legal team meetings is also expected. The role may necessitate responsiveness to time-sensitive matters beyond standard working hours due to the global nature of the Internet Archive. We value a proactive, collaborative approach to tackling projects of all sizes within our small yet impactful organization.
Key Responsibilities- Draft, review and negotiate contracts for all departments;- Organize and maintain the organization’s contracts and other important legal documentation;- Support engineering teams building new services and features;- Maintain deep knowledge of worldwide content regulations, and laws relating to web scraping and user data requests;- Counsel on issues that touch upon user uploaded content, such as trust and safety, mis
- and disinformation, copyright, intermediary liability and government requests for information;- Interpret and operationalize worldwide regulations that affect the organization's operations;- Manage pro bono counsel; and- Represent the organization at workshops, meetings, and in collaborations.
Qualifications and Skills- At least years of experience either in a law firm, or in-house at a non-profit or technology company- A J.D. and license to practice law in any state in the US (as well as willingness to become licensed in California and/or Delaware)- Excellent organizational and communication skills. The ability to explain complex legal issues in everyday plain language for different types of audiences is essential to this role.- Experience working in a remote-first organization- Knowledge of digital libraries/archives, scholarly communications, data management, or open knowledge services, concepts, and practices is preferred- Flexibility, self-reliance, a sense of humor, a creative approach to problem-solving, and being energized by ambiguity, possibilities, and problem-solving are valuable qualities-
- A demonstrable history of providing practical guidance to solve complex, time-sensitive problems in close partnership with a variety of cross-functional teams.
