**Salary**: $250,000 - 275,000 CAD / year
**Duties**:
A veterinary soft tissue surgeon specializes in surgical procedures related to the soft tissues of animals, which include organs, muscles, blood vessels, and other non-bony parts of the body. Their expertise is particularly valuable in addressing conditions that involve internal organs and structures. The specific duties of the Veterinary Surgeon will include, but not be limited to:
**Diagnosis and Consultation**:
- Evaluate and diagnose medical conditions that require soft tissue surgical intervention.
- Consult with pet owners to discuss the diagnosis, treatment options, and potential outcomes.
**Surgical Planning**:
- Develop and plan surgical procedures tailored to each patient's specific condition.
- Consider the most appropriate techniques and approaches for soft tissue surgeries.
**Soft Tissue Surgeries**:
- Perform a variety of soft tissue surgeries, including but not limited to:
- Gastrointestinal surgeries (e.g., foreign body removal, tumor resection).
- Urogenital surgeries (e.g., bladder or kidney procedures, reproductive organ surgeries).
- Thoracic surgeries (e.g., lung lobectomy, diaphragmatic hernia repair).
- Oncological surgeries (e.g., removal of tumors or masses).
**Emergency Soft Tissue Surgery**:
- Respond to emergency cases that require immediate soft tissue surgical intervention, such as trauma or internal bleeding.
**Postoperative Care**:
- Monitor patients closely during the postoperative period to ensure a smooth recovery.
- Prescribe medications and recommend postoperative care procedures.
**Collaboration with Specialists**:
- Work collaboratively with other veterinary specialists, such as radiologists, oncologists, and anesthesiologists, when a multidisciplinary approach is needed.
**Diagnostic Imaging**:
- Interpret diagnostic imaging (e.g., ultrasound, CT scans) to aid in the diagnosis and planning of soft tissue surgeries.
**Client Education**:
- Educate pet owners about the surgical procedure, postoperative care, and expected outcomes.
- Provide information on preventive measures to avoid future soft tissue issues.
**Record Keeping**:
- Maintain detailed and accurate medical records related to soft tissue surgeries.
- Document preoperative assessments, surgical procedures, and postoperative care plans.
**Continuing Education**:
- Stay abreast of the latest advancements in soft tissue surgery through continuous learning and professional development.
**Ethical Standards and Regulations**:
- Adhere to ethical standards and comply with veterinary laws and regulations governing soft tissue surgical procedures.
- Soft tissue surgeons play a crucial role in addressing a wide range of medical conditions that involve internal organs and structures. Their skills are essential for providing effective and specialized care for animals in need of soft tissue surgical interventions.
**Requirements**:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent and three to four years of additional postgraduate studies or completion of residency program in veterinary surgery are required
- Must be board-certified or eligible to be boarded with the American College of Veterinary Surgeons or European College of Veterinary Surgeons.
- Provincial licensing in Ontario from the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO) is required or ability to obtain
- Flexibility to work staggered shifts and to possibly work: day-shifts, nights, and weekends on a rotational basis
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues and educate pet owners
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to maintain accurate medical records
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with the latest advancements in veterinary surgery
- A genuine passion for providing high-quality care to animals and promoting their well-being
Pay: $250,000.00-$275,000.00 per year
