**Introduction**
WJ Groundwater is the leading construction dewatering and groundwater specialist in the UK with operations in Poland, the Middle East & Canada. We have specialized plant and equipment that allow us to install custom dewatering systems in various environments including from within tunnels and shafts and from the surface.
Well drilling is an essential part of our business and around the world we operate over 15 types of drilling rigs ranging from 5 to 30t and install over 3,500 boreholes per year ranging from 6m deep, 75mm diameter wellpoints to wells 600 mm diameter and up to 400 m deep. Key items of equipment such as drilling rigs are a resource to be shared by WJ operations globally if there is value to the Group or our customers.
**Key role objectives**
There are 2 principal functions of this position;
1. Understand and lead the drilling activities at site. Ensuring the drilling rig is operating as designed and standby equipment is ready for any contingencies. Maintain continuous communication with the Drilling Foreman and Project Engineers and keep them updated with the drilling progress.
2. Management and supervision of the drilling crew that are assigned to complete the task. You will be responsible for your own health and safety and that of your colleagues.

**Key Areas of Responsibility**
- Prior to drilling commencing have understanding of the project objective and subsequently oversee the evaluation, selection and implementation of drilling equipment and technologies
- Operate and maintain the assigned drill rig. Communicate the problems and ensure the optimize productivity is achieved.
- Prepare the SARs and daily rig inspection sheets. Assisste the Engineers to prepare the well records.
- Active participation in the identification, development, launch and implementation of new products and services.
- Deliver a high quality 'right first time' approach to all drilling activities
- Manage the activities of the drilling crews to ensure alignment with both business & client needs
- Implementation of Training & Development of drilling staff
- Display excellent technical understanding of drilling systems
- Monitor rig effectiveness and efficiency; makes recommendations for optimizing drilling performance
- Aid the Drilling Superintendent in categorizing and determine minimum standards for all ancillary equipment (e.g. drill rods, casings, pipes, tanks etc.)
- Effective co-ordination of the drilling plant maintenance schedule. Ensure maintenance procedures are carried out to the assigned drilling equipment according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Arrange transport of drilling plant and equipment
- Ensure the equipment is consistently presented to a high level to promote a professional image to the customer.
To undertake such other duties as may be reasonably expected
**Health, Safety, Environment & Quality**
To be responsible for own health and safety and that of colleagues, in accordance with current construction guidance and relevant legislation.
You will follow HSE MS procedures and ensure objectives and KPI’s are consistently met and exceeded.
**Qualifications and Experience**
- A motivated and hardworking individual with a “get stuck in” attitude is essential for this position.
- You must have demonstrated previous experience as a driller in construction projects in a variety of circumstances with a range of equipment. You will have experience and be able to demonstrate evidence of the direct supervision driller helpers, operators, drill sites, or construction activities.
- You will have experience of undertaking and briefing others on Risk Assessments for dewatering operation activities.
- You will partake and contribute to regular management, planning, HSE, and design meetings at the WJ Canada office - you need to demonstrate previous experience of working collaboratively and effectively.
- Training and support will be provided to help to increase your knowledge and skills in management techniques, commercial awareness and geotechnics if necessary.
**Person Profile**
The driller role is a crucial function in WJ’s operation. You must be an excellent verbal communicator and competent in written communications. A good telephone manner is required and you must be a good listener. You will always ensure that if you can’t answer a question immediately you will respond as soon as you can.
**Physical Requirements**
The role is predominately site based. Our construction sites can be difficult to access - you will be comfortable working outside, possibly in extreme heat or cold, walking long distances, accessing deep shaft staircases, entering tunnels and dealing with hostile working conditions.
