Radiation Safety Officer

**Summary of Duties**:
The Radiation Safety Department is a dynamic team committed to continually raise safety awareness, improve radiation safety standards, participate in decision making and consultation, and create/sustain an environment that inspires trust, integrity, collaboration and personal responsibility. The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) for Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (SHSC) and Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI), combined referred to as “Sunnybrook”, is accountable for, including but not limited to ensuring compliance to all regulations of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). Moreover, this individual is accountable for broad range of the support of the Radiation Safety Program, including but not limited to executing tasks assigned to comply with provincial regulations of the Ministry of Health (MOH) / Ministry of Labour (MOL). To administer policies and procedures, promote radiation safety, represent the Radiation Safety Program on other committees.
- Ensuring compliance with federal regulatory and licensing requirements
- Maintaining authority and accountability for ensuring records are appropriately documented and maintained to the Canadian Nuclear Safety and Control (CNSC) Regulations and Hospital standards
- Review, approve and maintain an up-to-date inventory of radionuclides and sealed sources, and ensure that such inventories are stored in appropriately secured environments, including but not limited to: signage, space, security systems, shielding
- Conduct audits to monitor compliance with CNSC license requirements and monitor users of radioactive materials to ensure that SHSC operations, equipment and facilities comply with SHSC policy and procedures and achieve “as low as reasonably achievable” (ALARA) principle of dose limitation
- Develop, implement, maintain and provide Sunnybrook Radiation Safety Program training for all staff and ensure appropriate training of staff whose duties occasionally expose them to radioactive materials (facility services, patient transport, materials management, nursing, etc.); Training and approval of nuclear energy workers
- Reviewing radiation exposure levels and maintaining authority for suspending any or all operations if a hazardous situations involving radioactive materials arise including conducting investigations on radiation safety related incidents/ accidents
- Performing emergency response, risk management and continuous quality improvement
- Performing calculations for shielding plans and equipment installations, post installation (of the x-ray emitting equipment) survey
- Supporting an appropriate radiation safety training program is developed, managed and implemented; Training and approval of x-ray workers
**Qualifications/Skills**
- At a minimum, Bachelor of Science in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g. Health Physics, Medical, Physics, Radiation Biology) from a recognized institution, or Bachelor’s Technology in Nuclear Medicine from a recognized institution.
- Three (3) - five (5) years of recent, related professional operational radiation safety experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Canadian Radiation Protection Association designation (CRPA (R)), preferred.
- Completion of a Radiation Safety Officer course or equivalent from a recognized program applicable for the use of radioactive materials under CNSC regulations required.
- Considered an asset: Certification in Health Physics by the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP), or Certification in Diagnostic Radiology Physics by The Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM), or Certification in Diagnostic Medical Physics by the American Board of Radiology (ABR).
**Knowledge and Skills**:
- Knowledge and understanding of radiation protection philosophies, procedures, equipment and techniques. Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment.
- Demonstrated expertise and knowledge of the use of radioactive materials under CNSC regulations.
- Demonstrated technical expertise and knowledge of applicable legislation and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with both provincial and federal regulations involving radiation hazards and safety.
- Knowledge of industry-recognized radiation safety organizations and practice standards.
- Related scientific working experience would be an asset in radiation physics, radiation protection instrumentation, x-ray emitting equipment.
- Must possess effective communication and interpersonal skills in investigating issues, providing leadership, advice and guidance work well independently and collaboratively with others in a team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to teach, demonstrate, facilitate and coach.
