Come and be a part of this success- About Potash- The Jansen project in Saskatchewan, Canada is set to become one of the largest potash mines in the world and is located approximately 140 kilometers east of Saskatoon. BHP’s CAD$14 billion (US$10.5 billion) investment in the Jansen project will deliver a potash mine in Saskatchewan designed to maximize sustainability. As the largest investment in Saskatchewan’s history, Jansen is expected to generate approximately 5,500 workforce opportunities during construction and 900 long-term roles.- Jansen's construction will take place over several years with first production planned for late 2026. Once fully ramped up, Jansen is expected to have an initial production capacity of approximately 8.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), with the potential to produce 16 to 17 Mtpa in future stages. - Work Location- Downtown, Saskatoon office. 40 hours per week. Hybrid working (flexible, shared workstations and a combination of office and work from home) is standard for BHP.- Purpose- Reporting to the Manager of Indigenous Engagement, the **Principal, Indigenous Engagement, BHP Canada** will lead the design and implementation of an Indigenous engagement strategy for BHP’s Potash business in Canada. The incumbent will also lead engagements with Indigenous communities and organizations in order to build trust and partnerships. Engagement efforts will focus on the following key external stakeholder groups:
- Indigenous communities in Saskatchewan and western Canada
- Indigenous businesses
- Provincial & National Indigenous organizations
- Government agencies, regulators, and non-governmental organizations
- Regional universities
- Community leaders, opinion leaders and consulting services
- About the Role- Responsibilities include:
- Collaboratively implementing BHP’s Canadian Indigenous Partnership Plan
- Promoting and implementing initiatives related to BHP’s global Indigenous Peoples Policy and Strategy, including regional plans
- Collaboratively designing, executing and monitoring BHP’s Indigenous Social Investment strategy in Canada
- Supporting negotiations and ongoing governance of agreements with Indigenous communities and organizations
- Leading and supporting the management of socio-environmental commitments (regulatory and voluntary) related to Indigenous communities in the area of influence of BHP Operations and developments
- Providing advisory services to other business and functional teams within BHP
- Supporting the preparation of reports, data collection, preparation of presentations and monitoring of the fulfillment of tasks related to Indigenous peoples
- Leading research and studies as required
- About You- University graduation in social sciences, business or related disciplines
- A minimum of 10 years of professional experience and a minimum of 5 years experience in leading Indigenous engagement strategy and delivery on resource development projects (or related projects)
- Advanced knowledge of, and experience working in Saskatchewan and western Canada
- Deep experience working with communities is required as is a track record of developing trust and strong relationships with community leaders
- A requirement of this role is to have knowledge and experience with the duty to consult, related legislation and policy and international standards for Indigenous engagement (e.g. United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples)
- Knowledge and experience in the mining sector is considered an asset, particularly in relation to regulatory processes, environmental assessment processes, environmental management and international standards on sustainability
- Knowledge and experience with social investment programs is considered an asset, particularly in relation to the design, management and evaluation of community investment programs
- Knowledge and experience with socio-environmental projects is considered an asset, including collaborative monitoring programs, ecosystem conservation, cultural heritage and related projects
- Experience and knowledge with the implementation of agreements, compliance mechanisms and commitment tracking is preferred
