Property Caretaker and General Repairs Person

Start Me Up Niagara (SMUN) is home to a dedicated team who strives to provide encouragement, support, and assist with the immediate needs of persons struggling with significant life challenges. Many of these adversities include: mental health issues, addiction, homelessness, and poverty. Our goal is to provide opportunities to help individuals increase their level of self-sufficiency and improve their quality of life. Our services range from daily drop in, community lunches, health care, income maximization, arts, garden, housing supports and employment development.
The We are looking for a property cleaner and caretaker to do twice weekly clean up of exterior of building including garbage and waste collection, leaf blowing, lawn and weed trimming and power washing.
Additional tasks will include regular maintenance and repairs managed or owned by Start Me Up Niagara.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Respond to maintenance requests in a timely fashion
- Specify a timeline for completion of work
- Performs site inspections of the facilities and mechanical equipment to ensure proper operations
- Report any issues witnessed to the appropriate Program Team Lead and or Manager
- Ensure all operations meet and comply with Customer regulations, federal and provincial health and safety legislation, regulations, and company policies
- Work under the direction of the Employment & Social Enterprises Manager and in cooperation with other program staff to ensure the work is suitably completed
- Maintain a healthy and safe working environment as required under Health and Safety legislation
- Maintain a welcoming, safe environment that respects choice
- Reports damaged and defective equipment and advises the Employment & Social Enterprises Manager of required repairs.
- Able to work under mínimal supervision
- Must maintain sanitation and safety standards as required by law and/or SMUN policy.
- Other duties as assigned
**Required Skills**:
- Knowledge of trades related to building maintenance and repair
- knowledge of a variety of building maintenance procedures and techniques
- Knowledge of machinery, equipment and tools necessary for the maintenance and repair of public buildings
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
**Qualifications**:
- High School diploma or a GED equivalent qualification from an accredited institution.
- Previous experience in maintenance/building operations considered an asset
- Valid G class drivers license
- Trailer considered an asset (for some work)
- Reliable vehicle
- Available to work weekends and holidays if required
**This role may have physical demands including, but not limited to, lifting, bending, pushing, reaching, climbing ladders, pulling and/or extended walking and standing. This role may also require the usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).**

- Strong knowledge of safe work practices and procedures typical form maintenance operations
- Ability to work safely with a wide variety of hand and power tools and materials
- Excellent customer service skills

- Able to prioritize and organize workload and inventory
- A satisfactory Criminal Records Check including Vulnerable Sector Query is required if hired
- Possess an understanding of the needs and challenges of people living in poverty, struggling with compromised mental health, substance abuse issues, and homelessness
- Ability to work a flexible schedule - Available to work evenings, weekends and holidays as required for job completion
- Able to work legally in Canada
