The Simulated Participant (SP) Program at The Michener Institute of Education at UHN is looking to expand our roster.
If you are looking for casual, part-time work opportunities, are empathetic and want to contribute to the education of student health care providers, this job might be a great fit.
A Simulated Participant (SP) is someone who can be coached or trained to accurately and consistently recreate the history, personality, physical findings, and/or emotions of an actual patient or client at a particular point in time. SPs are trained to provide immediate feedback, from the patient/client perspective and are essential to the education of health care professionals. Simulated Participants come from all walks of life: no acting background or previous SP experience is required, but dependability, basic computer knowledge, internet access, and empathy are essential. This job is not for everyone but offers part-time occasional opportunities for those who have flexible schedules during business hours, live in Toronto as in-person attendance is required, and are interested in contributing to the educational process.
SP work at Michener is part-time, sporadic and generally limited to ‘regular business hours’ (Mon-Fri). Weekend work is rare. Pay is between $22-25/hour, depending on the project.
Skills/attributes:
- excellent listener
- strong verbal communication skills
- strong memory and recall
- reliable and punctual
- comfortable being videotaped for educational purposes
- lack of bias towards the healthcare system
- willing to be coached on and provide feedback
- comfortable with light touch (no invasive examinations), physical positioning and wearing a hospital gown over undergarments
**Responsibilities**:
- prepare and memorize case materials
- portray a patient/client outside of own experience effectively and consistently.
- keep all information regarding case materials, students and other SPs confidential
- respectful to all learners, faculty members and staff
