Small Housing BC (SHBC) is a non-profit organization working to accelerate the uptake of gentle density housing in numerous cities throughout British Columbia. From laneway homes to houseplexes, pocket neighbourhoods to tiny homes - Small Housing BC is the voice for Gentle Density Housing in the Province.

Single family neighbourhoods typically represent 80% of residential zones in a given city, representing the vast majority of the land mass, and offering a significant opportunity for build out of housing options. Over the last several years SHBC has worked hard to build up awareness of small housing as an option for delivering the communities of our future—ones that are sustainable, affordable and vibrant.

And it’s working.

Not only are cities clamoring for insights on how to offer their residents more housing options, industry is coming to the table with innovative solutions and capacity. But there is still more to be done. In order to drive greater adoption of small housing in British Columbia we need to support changes that encourage more of its development across the province.

Reporting to the Managing Director, the GDH Planner will be a key player in developing and advancing professional knowledge of GDH, and supporting innovation in the planning sector. The GDH Planner will work to cultivate a community of practice for municipal staff across the Province which provides expert advice, resources, networking opportunities and support for the design and implementation of Gentle Density Housing.

**Specific Duties and Responsibilities**
- Conduct assessments of municipal planners knowledge-base to gauge needs and interests related to GDH that could be addressed through a Community of Practice.
- Design and implement a recruitment and onboarding process for municipal staff from across the Province
- Alongside contracted experts, develop tools and resources such as case studies and model bylaws; convene and facilitate cross-sector technical tables to address common challenges related to GDH: optimizing affordability, managing parking trade-offs, standardizing approaches to servicing and infrastructure
- Provide technical and strategic support to select municipal partners for zoning amendments, model approval processes, program supports, and design criteria and/or pre-approved designs for GDH typologies including houseplexes, single lot rowhouses, and various infill configurations
- Support collaboration with architecture and design professionals, to create a set of sample small housing designs
- Conduct policy and program research and consolidate good-practices resources
- Organize webinars, networking sessions and peer-to-peer curated discussions to facilitate engagement
- Perform other related duties/responsibilities as assigned

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**
- Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives of municipal planning
- Thorough knowledge of Local Government Act, related planning legislation, planning policies, bylaws and regulatory requirements
- Excellent knowledge of and experience with a wide range of public consultation and facilitation methods
- Experience in facilitating professional community
- Outstanding interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Strong commitment to teamwork
- Knowledge of current trends and developments in the area of work assigned
- Ability to deal tactfully on political issues and present professional recommendations and advice for committee and Council consideration
- Ability to understand and respond to legal opinions and government policy documents
- Ability to understand and interpret development proformas and other financial analyses
- Familiarity with architectural and design concepts
- Skill in preparing and presenting comprehensive plans, reports and submissions
- Preference for knowledge and experience in the use of computer based graphic mapping programs (Autodesk, AutoCAD Map and ESRI ArcGIS software along with a broad general knowledge of information technology systems and database programming techniques)
- Preference for knowledge of SketchUp or other modeling software
- Ability to travel for meetings and events

**Qualifications**
- University degree in Planning or other related discipline
- Minimum of 8-10 years experience working in a local government setting, or in combination with architecture, development or other related sector experience
- Progressively responsible professional planning experience with an emphasis on development and policy planning
- Preference for planning experience in British Columbia
