Graduation Coach for Black Students - Child and Youth Worker **Position Type**: Permanent, Full Time **Total FTE Available**: 1.0 FTE **Dates**: School Year **Location(s)**: Board-Wide - Multiple Locations **Salary Range**: Diploma holder (Category 1) $45,438.00 - $69,423.00 (annually) Degree holder (Category 2) $57,724.00 - $90,477.00 (annually) Position Summary This position reports to the Superintendent of Equity and Indigenous Education. The Graduation Coach for Black Students works under the administrative direction of the Superintendent of Equity and Indigenous Education or designate, as a member of the Equity and Indigenous Education Department and the Child and Youth Worker Department. In collaboration with administrators, guidance counsellors, teachers, special education and learning services personnel, parents and students, the Graduation Coach provides culturally responsive support to Black secondary students to promote student success and overall well-being. Qualifications for Graduation Coach for Black Students Minimum Community College Diploma in Child and Youth Work Minimum three (3) years of Child and Youth Work practice experience following graduation Minimum of two (2) years of Child and Youth Work practice experience or related experience following graduation if experience has been within an educational system Life experience deeply rooted in local Black communities Understanding of the diversity and composition of Black communities Training in anti-oppression and anti-black racism pedagogies within an educational context Ability to identify barriers and intervention points Ability to be a mentor and an advisor to Black students Awareness of local community resources and ability to support students and their families in accessing and navigating culturally responsive resources Other skills identified as necessary by the school board and participating secondary schools based on local context Responsibilities of the Graduation Coach for Black Students The Coach will support Black students involved in the project by: Acting as a mentor and advisor to the students; Collaborating with administrators, teachers and other Board staff, parents/guardians/families, and the broader community in responding to individual and systemic barriers (e.g., academic, mental health and justice); Identifying and addressing individual barriers to engagement, learning and well-being; and, Facilitating access and referrals to academic supports and community resources to provide an integrated support system for the students. **The Coach will**: Engage Black students by affirming the identities and cultures of Black students through Culturally Responsive and Relevant Pedagogy; Act as a mentor and an advisor to the students and play an essential role as an advocate for each learner with teachers, other school staff and families; Work with a range of stakeholders, including school staff, parents/guardians/families, and community members, to support the learning of Black students; Work with the Core Team and school staff to create a long-term vision/plan for identified at-risk Black students; Establish a safety plan during breaks in regular programming (i.e. long weekends, extended breaks, etc.) for participating students; Build/maintain information on each individual student, utilizing the secondary school’s educational software resource throughout the year to track and monitor academic achievement and well-being (i.e. suspension/expulsion, credit accumulation, attendance); and, Create space for students to voice their experiences to enable the school board and secondary school establish trusting relationships and responsive services.
