Job Summary

Working in a fast-paced, dynamic agency among a team of diverse communications professionals, the Communications Advisor will provide critical advice, guidance and support to multiple internal clients seeking to achieve profile for their activities and impacts among the public, research community, and other key stakeholder groups. The Communications Advisor develops implements and evaluates communications plans and activities to promote Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and/or Tri-agency policies, priorities, programs and/or initiatives. Together with the position’s immediate supervisor, develops and implements approaches, strategies and positioning for SSHRC and its programs, and offers communications advice and support to internal clients. Works with universities and other stakeholders and partners to promote SSHRC activities, including organization of media and promotional events.

Education

Graduation with a degree from a recognized university in a relevant field of study (e.g. Communications, Journalism, Marketing), and/or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience related to the position.

Experience

Experience
- Significant experience in providing strategic communications expertise, advice and support to clients, supervisors, senior management and external stakeholders;
**Experience in developing and implementing communications strategies and plans.
**Experience in developing a variety of communications products in at least three of the following: speaking notes/speeches, briefing documents, backgrounders/factsheets, media lines, questions and answers, news releases, brochures, presentations, internal messages and key messages.
**Experience in planning and organizing events for external audiences that meet strategic communications objectives, including conferences and workshops, ministerial announcements, news conferences, media briefings and promotional activities.
- Significant: refers to the depth and breadth of experience associated with a minimum of three (3) years of experience.

Asset Qualifications
- Experience working within an academic, scientific, research and/or research environment
- Experience in media relations and planning media events and opportunities.
- Experience coordinating internal and change communication strategies or plans
- Experience in emergency or crisis communications.

Knowledge

Knowledge of Government of Canada communications policies, regulations and procedures
Knowledge of SSHRC’s mandate
Knowledge of communications techniques, trends and processes
Knowledge of digital marketing communications techniques
Knowledge of best practices in organizational and corporate communications
