**Responsibilities**:
OVERALL PURPOSE:
The Support Shops Machinist Tradesperson is responsible for completing a variety of machining tasks. This includes but is not limited to machining wheels, axles, truck components and frames, specialty tool fabrication and other equipment and component repair/fabrication.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Works independently or under the direction of the Support Shops or Vehicle Supervisor, as assigned.
2. Operate a manual lathe, milling machine and other manual or computer controlled machining equipment to repair various truck components, wheels, axles and other components, and to fabricate new components to drawings and specifications.
3. Makes recommendations for equipment and procedural changes.
4. Repairs and maintains the wheel press, lathe and other machining equipment.
5. Performs troubleshooting and repair of various mechanical systems and components as required.
6. Completes documentation and accounts for time and materials used in the performance of the duties.
7. Performs tests and prepares related reports as required.
8. Identifies technical problems and develops corrective measures.
9. Coordinates with various contractors and vendors in the repair, modification and maintenance of support equipment.
10. Certifies that work performed complies with the specifications required and ensures that records of the work performed are completed.
11. Provides instruction and direction to other staff assisting with the work as required.
12. Attends technical and safety training programs to continually upgrade skills.
13. Signs off work as being completed to standard.
14. Operates Skytrain vehicles and support vehicles as required.
15. Interprets and prepares maintenance manuals, blueprints, drawings, and procedures required in the performance of their duties.
16. Handles emergencies and failures in accordance with established procedures through immediate response and quick action.
17. Performs related duties as assigned, such being items of a minor nature which do not affect the value of the job.
SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
As per WorkSafeBC regulations, this job requires an annual fit test and may necessitate the use of a respirator. In either case, the employee must be clean shaven. Any exemption requests should be raised to Occupational Health and/or Labour Relations for consideration.
**Qualifications**:
Red Seal Certification as a Machinist, experienced in operating manual lathes, milling machines, grinders and various other manual or computer controlled machines.
Minimum of five (5) years recent machining experience in the rail maintenance or related industry.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License.
Experience interpreting blue prints and specifications
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a maintenance team
**Other Information**:
Recruitment Process: An applicant will be required to demonstrate their suitability for this position by meeting the minimum level of qualifications and experience in order to be invited into the selection process. A standard interview format will be used including general, scenario and behavioural descriptive interview questions.
**Work Schedule**:
40 hours per week.
**Work Designation**:
Resident
This position works predominately on-site.
**Rate of Pay**:
Wage: $56.47 per hour
