The Detectors Group at TRIUMF plays a crucial role in the field of particle and nuclear physics. They specialize in designing, developing, manufacturing, and assembling detector systems for both local and global projects. Currently, we are seeking a highly skilled Journeyperson Machinist to join our team.

As a valued member of the Detector Support Facility, the Certified Journeyperson Machinist will assume a pivotal role in providing machining services and technical support to the Detectors Group and other significant TRIUMF projects. Moreover, this position will involve spearheading the development of innovative manufacturing processes and techniques to propel detector technology advancements.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Machines metal, plastic, ceramics, composites, and other specialty materials with emphasis on high precision, tight tolerance, and quality control.
- Manufactures and assembles complex and delicate detectors.
- Develops manufacturing processes and techniques for exotic material and/or niche requirement.
- Guides and mentors junior machinists and technicians.
- Programs, operates, and maintains CNC lathe & vertical milling center.
- Operates general shops equipment such as benders, shear, bandsaw, drill press, etc.
- Maintains workplace safety through regular housekeeping.
- Keeps detailed record relating to assigned tasks and provides timely updates to supervisor.
- Liaises and coordinates with other TRIUMF machinists/technicians and external shops.
- Contacts suppliers and procure parts/material with competitive pricing.
- Travels to external labs and manufacturing facilities in support of projects.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

- Patience, critical thinking, and troubleshooting skills are critical
- Experience machining metal, plastic, ceramics, and various composite material
- Extensive knowledge and operational experience with CNC and manual lathes & mills
- Competency with 3D CAD/CAM software, preferably SolidWorks and MasterCAM
- Proficiency with general shop equipment such as bender, shear, bandsaw, drill press, etc.
- Working knowledge of basic mechanical engineering principles, techniques, and tolerances
- Experience with manufacturing processes and techniques R&D is an asset
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Ability to keep detailed records and be organized
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Willingness to learn and adapt new technologies and techniques
- Expertise in high-precision manufacturing and quality control highly desirable
- Competency in handling and assembling delicate mechanical & electronic components a plus
- Mentoring, coaching, and/or experience is favorable

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Trades certification as a Machinist, and a minimum of 4 years of journeyperson experience.

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).
