Epidemiologist, Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs

Sinai Health is looking for an Epidemiologist to support our Infection Prevention and Control Department at our Mount Sinai Campus and Hennick Bridgepoint Campus.
The Epidemiologist plays a critical role in supporting and advancing the organization’s Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) and Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASP). This role involves leadership in data management, surveillance, analysis, and reporting activities aligned with best practices in infection prevention and control, as well as stewardship initiatives. The Epidemiologist will design and maintain databases, develop advanced data extraction and aggregation tools, and lead surveillance activities in compliance with the Canadian Nosocomial Infection Surveillance Program (CNISP). This position requires a proactive, analytical, and detail-oriented professional with strong skills in Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, epidemiology, and quality improvement methodologies. This role will have cross-site responsibilities for Mount Sinai Campus and Hennick Bridgepoint Campus.
**In this role you will**:
- Support quality improvement activities aimed at ensuring best practices in infection prevention are implemented and proactive strategies are followed to identify, prevent and control hospital-acquired infections
- Conduct advanced epidemiological analysis of outbreak investigations and ongoing surveillance systems to identify trends and inform control strategies
- Provide timely infection control information and education to staff and leadership related to routine surveillance and infection prevention programs (e.g., healthcare-associated infections rates, nosocomial transmission events, device-associated infections, environmental organisms, etc.)
- Develop and deliver regular reports and presentations on infection control indicators for the Infection Prevention and Control Committee and stakeholders to support data-driven decision-making
- Lead and coordinate all activities related to the Canadian Nosocomial Infection Surveillance Program (CNISP), ensuring compliance with reporting standards and timelines
- Ensure mandatory reporting of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) to the Ministry of Health in accordance with provincial regulations and timelines
- Develop, manage, and analyze denominator data and other relevant information to support surveillance and program evaluation efforts, including the design and maintenance of unit-based infection control dashboards
- Develop reports and improve reporting of infection control indicators to the hospital community
- Stay current with evolving infection prevention and control policies, standards, protocols, and scientific literature, and translate these into practical operational strategies
- Collaborate with the antimicrobial stewardship team to develop data extraction, aggregation, and visualization tools that support daily clinical workflows and stewardship interventions
- Design and implement key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness and impact of antimicrobial stewardship activities
- Analyze antimicrobial usage patterns and resistance trends to identify opportunities for improvement
- Generate detailed reports and dashboards that inform clinical teams and leadership on stewardship performance metrics
- Participate in stewardship program evaluations and research projects to optimize antimicrobial use and patient outcomes
- Support integration of antimicrobial stewardship data with infection control surveillance systems to enhance comprehensive infection management
- Design, develop, and maintain complex relational databases using Microsoft Access to support infection control and antimicrobial stewardship data needs
- Ensure database integrity, accuracy, security, and timely updates to meet program requirements
- Develop and optimize queries, forms, and reports within Access to facilitate user-friendly data input and retrieval
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to database performance and functionality
- Collaborate with IT and clinical informatics teams to integrate Access databases with other hospital information systems as appropriate
- Utilize advanced Excel functions including pivot tables, macros, Power Query, and complex formulas for data analysis and visualization
- Develop and automate Excel-based tools and dashboards to improve efficiency and accessibility of infection control and stewardship data
- Train and support staff in the use of Excel tools related to surveillance and stewardship programs
- Participate in cross-functional committees and working groups focused on infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, and quality improvement
- Contribute to the development and implementation of organizational policies and procedures related to infection control and stewardship
