Open Ocean Robotics is seeking to qualify and add USV Pilots to our Ocean Services team. You will be responsible for the safe operations of a small robotic surface vessel with other OOR team members using a computer interface. The location of this activity will depend on the customer and mission as this new position helps us meet the needs of our operational commitments for customers. Each engagement will be different, and your location may be our offices in Victoria or somewhere else in the world.

This is not a full-time position, it is casual or on-call.

We seek interested individuals with real-world boating, watchkeeping, or mate experience. If selected, OOR will provide you with a custom USV Pilot training program delivered in house for qualification on the technical aspects of OOR's USV, pilot interface, standard operating procedures, safe operations, and following mission parameters. Once trained, we will contact you as opportunities arise to determine interest, availability, and enter an agreement for each engagement.

Examples of opportunities include:

- Three weeks working 8- 12 hours per day in the middle east in support of U.S. Naval operations in the Arabian gulf.
- 4 hours per day for 2 weeks in Victoria as part of deployments working with DFO Canada in British Columbia coastal waters.
- Two weeks onboard a vessel in the Arctic Ocean supporting Coast Guard operations.
- Experience operating small vessels and/or standing watch,
- A willingness to travel with a current passport and ability to enter and work temporarily in foreign countries,
- Comfort standing night watches for up to 8 hours,
- Ability to support launch and recovery of the USV under the guidance of qualified OOR staff,
- Comfort working in a technical environment.

**Core Responsibilities**
- Work with OOR's Ocean Services team to deploy and operate OOR's Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV)
- Become an expert operator on OOR's custom graphical user interface system, Xplorer View (XV),
- Operate the USV to best meet mission parameters while collecting the required data.
- Support the OOR team in delivering value to the customer and meeting mission objectives.
- Observe and monitor USV operational patterns and system and identify and resolve issues, problems, and faults.
- Follow SOPs (standard Operating Procedures), logging and communicating events.
- Write summary reports on mission activities for both internal and external purposes,
- Record, report and follow up on issues on the software and hardware system IAW with SOPs.
- Be an active voice for continuous improvement in a rapidly evolving environment,

**Requirements**:

- Experience as a watch keeper on any size vessel,
- Hold, or be willing to obtain, Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) certificate,
- Desire to develop a good working knowledge of robotic systems,
- Degree or diploma in nautical studies, nautical sciences, engineering, oceanography, environmental technology, or similar field preferred,
- Excellent communication, interpersonal skills,
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills,
- Highly self-motivated and able to work independently,
- Willingness to learn and tenacity to finish what you start,
- Good at working with a diverse group of people & building team culture,

**Working Conditions**

This is a casual, on-call position based in Victoria, B.C. available for immediate start. We expect this position will be executed through short-term engagements with the possibility of moving to a permanent position as our customer base increases. There will be a specific paid training period which will require full-time engagement in Victoria for approximately one week, and then short-term engagements to support operational commitments later.
