Job Summary
This role is responsible for the UBC Bookstore’s online store and the UBC Card’s online and digital presence. Key accountabilities include developing the Bookstore’s online sales strategy, overseeing selection of products to offer online, liaising with buyers and external vendors and achieving online revenue and profit targets. They oversee the timely addition of a diverse range of products to the website, ensuring accuracy, relevant and optimal presentation to enhance the online shopping experience for our customers. Works with the marketing team to refine the ecommerce site, develop and implement online sales promotions tactics and advance implementation of a digital UBC card. Supervises ecommerce staff and may supervise external agencies, freelancers, or co-op/work-study students as needed.
Organizational Status
The Ecommerce & Digital Card Manager is a member of the Bookstore leadership team and reports to the Director, Bookstore and Campus Mail. The position works collaboratively with the buying and marketing teams in the Bookstore, SHCS IT colleagues, and web and other communications professionals across both campuses.
Work Performed
- Develops the Bookstore’s ecommerce strategy and is responsible for its implementation including achieving sales targets.
- Oversees the Bookstore’s ecommerce site solution, ensuring a positive user experience for customers including meeting web accessibility standards.
- Oversees selection of products to offer online, liaising with buyers and external vendors and achieving online revenue and profit targets. They oversee the timely addition of a diverse range of products to the website.
- Collaborates with the marketing team, SHCS IT, and partners to implement software upgrades, UX/UI improvements, site map improvements and more.
- Monitors site for any product issues and corrects them promptly.
- Optimizes the product mix and customer’s purchase experience once they arrive on the ecommerce site to improve conversion rates and maximize sales. Manages day to day SEO work related to product listings.
- Monitors key performance indicators such as traffic, conversion rates, average order value, cart abandonment rates etc. to maximize sales. Utilizes data analytics tools to track performance and provide regular reports to the Bookstore leadership team.
- Manages the ecommerce team, including setting priorities for their work, and assigning tasks such as product photography, adding/updating listings etc. Coaches the team’s day to day work, provides training as needed, and supports their professional development. Identifies workflow or process improvements as needed.
- Plans and supervises lifestyle photography and other shoots to support online sales.
- Serves as the main point of contact between the ecommerce team and the Bookstore buyers, warehouse staff, and marketing team. Liases with buyers to address any issues that arise or assign product improvement tasks to the ecommerce team.
- Performs research and analysis to determine and uphold ecommerce industry best practices.
- Develops and implements plans to digitize the UBC Card
- Performs other related duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Must be able to work independently and exercise judgment and decision making in overseeing the Bookstore’s ecommerce operations. Represents the Bookstore and UBC, and must exercise professional judgement, collegiality, and initiative while undertaking all responsibilities and developing relationships with partners.
Incorrect decisions or judgements will directly impact the Bookstore and UBC’s reputation with students, faculty, staff, partners, and the broader community. Inappropriate actions, errors in performance or indiscretions in judgment can negatively impact the Bookst
